Now, explain that flat earthers.
quote:
At 1:57 a.m. AKDT Wednesday, America's northernmost city saw a sunset for the first time since May 10, ending an 84-day period during which areas north of the Arctic Circle never saw the sun dip below the horizon.
quote:
Despite all this possible sunshine, average highs in Barrow – now known as Utqiagvik – reach a yearly peak of only 47 degrees in July, thanks not only to the northern latitude, but also its proximity to the Arctic Ocean, which is covered in ice near the coast for much of the year.
quote:
The opposite occurs from mid-November through late January, when the sun doesn't rise for about two months north of the Arctic Circle. In Barrow, this "polar night" will begin with the last sunset Nov. 18 at 1:38 p.m. AKST and continue until the sun pops above the horizon Jan. 22 at 1:26 p.m. AKST.
It's a common misconception that Barrow and areas north of the Arctic Circle are completely dark during this period.
Civil twilight, defined as the point when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon, allows sufficient light to see objects outside. This civil twilight period is about 6 hours long near the beginning and end of polar night but shrinks to about three hours in the heart of the polar night just before Christmas
Now, explain that flat earthers.

for some reason, this is fascinating to me...I would like to live there for a year just to experience these periods where the sun never rises/sets....

It's pretty crazy. I mean here in Anchorage it's like 20+ hours at the peak of solstice.
Winter you get like 4 hours of daylight; however the daylight doesn't get that bright. It's like being stuck in a continuous morning skyline.
Barrow is crazy. Especially when you have to fend off the bloodthirsty vampires during the long nights

I'll always call it Barrow.
They have a cool football field though

Do people get depressed in the winter?

I understand that it is very difficult...lots of depression, etc. when you never see the sun.

Seasonal depression disorder.
People get it and have to get artificial lights.
I moved up here and didn't have any issues though

I worked up there for a couple years. Summer isn't bad, but the no daylight in the winter is depressing.

White nights are bad enough. The summer is more difficult to deal with the light than the darkness of winter imo

Having to continously fend off the hungry polar bears is an issue in the summer and fall. That causes depression too jk

We don't have total darkness in winter, shortest day is about 5 hours of light, but it doesn't bother me.

Yep! I had issues with the long summer sun. When the light, any light comes in in the morning, I instantly would wake up. Got better in time, now I don't have any issues.
Sun blocking curtains are the best

I loved when Ricky dragged Karl Pilkington up there: LINK
