CBS story
Story says soldier had short notice that he could fly home for Memorial Day. He had a stand ticket to fly home. But for unmentioned reasons, he kept missing flights and missing flights even though there were open seats. He then asks the gate agent if there was anything else he could do and was told no.
A stranger offers to give up his ticket 10 minutes before boarding. Airline says too late for changes. Stranger then pulls out wallet and buys soldier a ticket home.
My questions...
The stranger made the offer at the gate and the soldier must have had a valid ticket. So why would another ticket need to be purchased?
If there was an available seat to be purchased why would the seat not be given to the soldier on a non full flight about to depart ?
Can one actually purchase a ticket at the gate? Does not seem logical as you need a ticket to get to the gate.
I am not following this story or something does not add up. Any frequent flyers have any insight here?

All good questions. Some airlines have service desks near certain gates to accommodate travel changes and do rather quickly.
As for what happened to the soldier's ticket, good question.

1. He had a standby ticket, not a real purchased ticket.
2. The flight was likely full due to people ahead of him on the standby list, so if a ticket was purchased someone else on standby would be bumped.
3. Yes
"Missing flights" is likely due to the flight being full of paying passengers and passengers ahead of him on the standby list.

From what I have been reading, standby tickets are not really done any more nor would they be any cheaper. So I am not sure why he would not have just purchased a normal ticket.
I did not think you can buy a "standby" ticket to specially be on stand by. You purchase a nirmal ticket for a scheduled flight then arrive early in the hopes of getting on an earlier flight. Correct me if I am misunderstanding this process.

While I like the idea behind these stories, almost all traveling soldier stories strike me as being fake or largely sensationalized. For that matter, so many of these stories all read like they were written by the same person.
