There was a thread a few months ago, might've been about the Murdaugh trial, where a town in South Carolina was mentioned. It was described as almost all white, mostly blonde hair, Catholic, and made up of only a couple of families. I was talking to my sister yesterday (she lives about an hour west of Charleston), and she had never heard of it. I searched the net but couldn't find anything. We're both interested in "quircky" history and culture, so I would appreciate a reference to that thread or any other info. Maybe I'm totally wrong here - it wouldn't be the first time. Thanks in advance.

Might be Murphy Village. Close to Edgefield, it is the home of a small community of Irish Travelers, or gypsies as they’re known to the locals.

They’re a closed Catholic society with strange customs and have been involved with many scams in the area over the years. They’re not all blonde but the women get dolled up and the men are just straight up weird.

They live in trailers behind these big mansions with statues of the Virgin Mary in the front yard. Definitely worth passing through and checking out when you’re in the area.

Probably has the highest fraud rate per capita in the state.

Wasn’t one of the scams construction fraud? They’d show up and quote a project at a really great rate, ask for half up front, show up for a few days and vanish.

That might be it, but we had talked about that town before, and it seems like it was something else. Like I said, could definitely be wrong. Thanks for the reply, will have to check it out the next time I'm in country.

The absolute ugliest “mansions” ever built. The architecture of those houses is an eyesore.

Are these locals Irish travelers? There is a community similar to this where I am. All Irish travelers, which is a nice way to say trashy thieves

Very strange group of people. Can't understand a fricking word they say.

The women are notorious for stealing from stores. The men "travel" a lot running scams all over the country. A lot of them are construction scams but they don't limit themselves to that. They did burn the city of Statesboro GA on a repair for the court house roof. I think Paul Harvey did a "rest of the story" on that one time.

They also got involved with either making tools or buy shitty tools. I believe it was the Rebel Tool Company.

They would load a trailer with shite tools and then pretend to breakdown near mechanic shops. They would claim they were willing to sell the entire trailer of tools for X amount of $$$$$. Get the money and then haul arse.

They do have some great homes in the Edgefield area and they do put tin foil over the windows and live in trailers instead of the house for the first year. Supposedly has something to do with giving time for evil spirits to get out of the house.

They have a pretty big problem with inbreeding and therefor fricked up kids.

From time to time they will approach a male that it is not a part of their "family" to frick some girls just to try and alleviate this problem. They offer cash for this service but you may end up being asked to frick a 13 year old. It will be a young unmarried child either way.

I used to work with guy that said he was offered about 5K to participate in this once. That was about 25 years ago. He may have been full of shite but didn't seem to be.

They pay you to sleep with underage girls? Don’t tell Diddy.

That's repulsive, but nothing surprises me anymore. And nothing under the sun is new, except the prevalence.

Yep, and my understanding is the police rounded a bunch of them up and sent them to jail a while back.

They’d also drive around neighborhoods in the Augusta area and find homes where the owners were away and pull some shingles off the roof. They’d come back to the homeowners and say they could fix it and then take off with the up front payments.
