Stephen Curry’s prominence resurfaces issues of colorism among blacks This is the first of two consecutive commentaries by Michael Eric Dyson on Stephen Curry, his family and their influences on questions of race, color, family and faith.
But there is a vexing issue I didn’t raise with Curry and his family — an issue that his celebrity has shined new light on: the difference one’s visibility makes to the race, and to the larger world, if one is light-skinned or dark-skinned.

The politics of shade have shadowed black folk from the time we set foot in North America. Curry’s fame has upped the ante: Suspicion surrounds him because of his light skin, and because he’s been lauded by both the NBA and media establishments. The subliminal message has become explicit: Curry is a brother we may not be able to embrace because the powers that be embrace him too. Curry is not the first black man who makes some black folk uneasy because America loves him as much as we do, but he may be the most popular contemporary figure evoking that dilemma. And Curry’s color is at the heart of that dilemma.

and shaq
and kobe
and lebron

there haven't even been that many "light skinned black" superstars and to claim this is giving him some advantage is a literal display of ignorance to the history of popularity of the NBA

Absolutely. And he's not that dark himself. That's Rush level trolling.

It's more common than you think.

In Pass Christian and Delisle, lots of the "black" people are very light skinned like Curry. Darker black people would call them "yellas" and they would fight over it.

Friend from the Navy was mix-raced white/black and blacks would call him half-breed all the time.

I remember hearing some black people calling other blacks "red".

I never understood what they meant.

yeah this is one of those things that people who live in lily white areas don't understand

i guess that's a point of these articles, to educate the ignorant un-diversified so they can act like they understand the "shades of grey" of race relations in the actually diversified areas of modern America

People like SC because he's an amazing talent without being physically huge.

He is the most popular basketball player now, but not as popular as Jordan or Magic were and Jordan and Johnson were plenty dark.

People obsessed with race will see race everywhere. The other 90% of America will continue to be amused by the frustration of the race baiters.

I have always found it kinda hilarious (and sad) that some black people actually act "racist" towards their own race when it comes to the shade of their "blackness"
