Other than the tiny New England states, nearly every state has a wealth of wildlife and geographic diversity to sate everyone's desires. You just have to know where to look.

Yeah, some of the Midwestern states are shitty. The Great Plains are boring. Otherwise, I think it's more equal than you'd think if you will look at it from possibilities per square mile.

Fun fact: the Mobile-Tensaw Delta is the most biodiverse area on the entire continent.

The gulf states have amazing fishing. The AT in the eastern states. Beaches in AL, FL, and GA. So much to do unless you are in the mid west. I have no clue why any human would spend their time there.

What's so good about Texas? Mexican food and music

Florida has beaches, Disneyworld, the biggest rednecks in the country, and a lot of people addicted to pain pills

How does Michigan make the list? It's cold

If Michigan is on there, why not Minnesota? I've heard more about Minnesota outdoors than Michigan.

Mountain states with lots of lakes and/or access to oceans should be on there. Tennessee and NC both ahead of Tier 2 and 3.

Why Montana and Maine?

I agree, not diverse. Hunting, fishing and winter sporting activities. Not much else

Michigan is surrounded by the great lakes and has a similar amount of inland lakes. Michigan has much better fishing as well.

Ought to list some outdoor activities in the OP.

Hunting, fishing, hiking, scuba diving, skiing (water and snow), boating, surfing etc.

One thing to note, scuba diving is not just for oceans. Springs especially with caves and clear lakes attract alot of scuba divers.

surfable/swimmable beaches, great saltwater fishing, then "mountains" not that far away. Everything in between kinda sucks though.

LOL at people from Alabama and Louisiana LOL'ing at Texas.

You've got fishing on the Gulf Coast along with some decent beaches farther south, beautiful Hill Country for hiking, fishing and river floating, and mountains in West Texas with a great national park in Big Bend.

NC, SC (Less snow skiing), and Tenn have everything I listed..Hunting, fishing, hiking, scuba diving, skiing (water and snow), boating, surfing (except Tenn)

Michigan does not have hiking or surfing. The variety of fishing in southern states especially those next to oceans is better.

Edit: or river rafting.

the skiing isn't the best, but to say there's no hiking in Michigan is laughable

I'm not LOLing at Texas, but I will LOL at people who would disparage the respective states for a dearth of outdoor activities. Both have a tremendous wealth of diversity of scenery and activities. Just because most of the natives are too lazy or stupid to know makes no difference.
