What about the majority of households that don't use cats? That don't want to fund BR projects of which they receive no benefit.

Who cares at this point? Let the people vote.

I've already moved out of BR.

Better than $15,000 sending your kids to school

Yea I have a lot of friends in Zachary and, based on an ballpark tax of $3500-$4500, if you have >1 kid it's a no-brainer compared to tuition. And even 1 kid is usually more expensive depending on the private school.

Would rather pay more and have the money go to things near me, those complaining about not having kids in school, better schools = increased property values so having good public schools benefits you as well.

You think they don't want better schools but are ok with their money going to send empty busses around town and pump endless money into downtown improvements they never use?

They're keeping with the narrative that they'll somehow end up with a surplus without increasing property taxes, yet they still bitch & moan every time there's a new annexation.

If they'll have that much money, I have to wonder why they care at all about the annexations.

The people will have the option of taxing themselves for better roads, schools, etc. if they want them.
And not have all of their property taxes stolen or given to bums who wont work.

My buddy lives in Zachary, has a 1600 sq ft house on a .25 acre lot and pays about $4,000 a year in taxes

Your buddy lives in a 1,600 sq ft house worth $360,000?

Just an example... A $300,000 dollar house would equate to roughly $3k annually for property taxes (with the homestead exemption) in Zachary. That can vary slightly depending on whether you live directly in the city limits or just within the school district. The folks within the school district would pay about another $100 per year for the same $300k house.

How to calculate
2013 Millage Rates

Residents of Zachary pay the following millages....

EBR Parish Millage = 49.128
The Zachary School Millage = is 79.20.
Zachary FIRE DIST. # 1 = 9
City of Zachary Millage is = 3.170

140.498 = Total Millage in the City Limits of Zachary

$300,000 value of home & land
-$75,000 homestead exemption
$22,500 assessed value ($225k / 10)
x .140498 mills

$3,161.21 Grand total for a $300K inside the city limits

As far as I can find, they don't pay for CATS.

Find a link where they do or shut up about it.

It's interesting that the petition submitted this morning has 18,200 signatures when back on August 25, nearly two months ago, the organizers said they had 17,750 signatures at that point. LINK

So they have only added an additional 450 signatures in just under two months when they said in July they collected 200 signatures in a week. LINK

Plus on August 25 Rainey said they were going to collect a total of 20,000 signatures, or 1,750 more signatures than they had in August, before they submitted the petition.

Of course at that time Rainey also said they hoped to turn the petition in by the first of October with 20,000 signatures.

How can anyone have confidence in what Rainey and the SG organizers say?

I'm sure Mr. Sprock will be here soon to tell us...

Well wouldn't they simply be bussed in from elsewhere in the St. George district?

Yes. And you realize, of course, that the proposed SG district is larger in area than Baton Rouge, right? So much for "neighborhood kids."

Unincorporated areas of EBR don't pay the CATS property tax yet those areas are served by the bus system.
