Sounds like the councilman is worried about legal ramifications from annexing, especially after the atty generals opinion on the matter.
Probably all legal, but it may start costing the city money if lawsuits are brought challenging the annexations.
I just appreciate how StG is labeled as the racists ones even though BR is going around predominately black areas to annex businesses.
StG would have been better to leave out Gardere area at this point since they gain nothing and have already been painted as racists.

If StG happens, and in ten years or so it looks like a success, could the MoL, and others, petition to join or rejoin StG?
I have wondered the same. I would think once the lines are drawn it is final.

Did you mean to post this in the other SG argument thread on the Poli Board? I've been following both threads and it seems to fit there better.
I didn't want to start another thread so I just put it here, but I thought it was pertinent to the discussion at hand.
But if it looks better there you can post it there for me.
I thought it interesting that Mary Olive is talking for the city and the city isn't exactly saying she has the right to talk for them.

I know I would not. The school issue is the only issue to me. I don't want to create more bureaucracy for the sake of a name or spite. I just want to be able to send my kids to schools I already pay for. But it won't happen so I will just continue paying the additional tax.
Same here

I think that would actually just confirm it.
To be clear, I think there are bad racial actors on BOTH sides.
But mainly just people who want what is best for their families.

Any political move is racist so, yeah I guess so.
They were branded racist despite including Gardere and other minority neighborhoods. BR has just been concerned about tax dollars and annexing businesses back in, but they are being portrayed as non racists.
Honestly, with no horse in the race this is a great social atom bomb to watch happening.
Posted on 10/21/14 at 12:49 pm to fightin tigers
But, like most atom bombs it's destructive and hurts real people. I understand the "pox on both your houses" frustration, but it's a poor substitute for a legitimate solution.

Wasn't the only hold back previously because they were not incorporated?

The only AG opinion I'm aware of is where he said the annexations of the Mall of Louisiana, Costco and Celtic Studio were too inconsequential to affect the validity of the incorporation petition.
Since then other much larger tracts of land have been annexed or will be annexed tomorrow.
So the AG's opinion was limited in scope, prior to the additional annexations and is not legally binding in a court anyway. It's just his opinion.
So what's the worry about his previous, outdated opinion?

Baton Rouge follows the same petition process as St George those. They are going after the big hitters one at a time on the way to desired targets because it is dumb to try to collect signatures from individual citizens. Has nothing to do with race, has to do with time.

No doubt. If/when the seperation happens there will probably be two school systems below par. EBR is fast on its way to being federally controlled like New Orleans schools.
Maybe StG can escape this for a number of years before eventually falling to the same fate, perhaps they can improve a little and stem the tide for a few decades.
It sucks that StG was forced to form their own government to have a chance at a new school system because it will divide the revenue and ultimately hurt the comeback that BR is on track to. I truly believe that Kip has BR on a good track, he just needs to get out of his way on wanting to leave a personal legacy project.
A sucessful independent school district in StG brings more money to the parish if a City of StG isn't forced to form. Now, because of being rejected in the legislature the recourse is to form a city and then form a school district, it means more overhead and less money to education for both sides.

I don't remember the exact wording, but there was some reference to cherry picking areas at the mall and police coverage. The areas were islands in StG.
Again, not illegal just called into question the tactics.

So he doesn't speak for "the city" any more than John Delgado speaks for "the city."

No.
Maybe not the only, but the major.
What do you believe holds back a ballot vote if StG incorporates?

New school grading is out - EBR has near 20% of schools failing the standards, given a C for overall performance. Zachary is tops of the list in the state again.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A total of 84 East Baton Rouge Parish Schools are included on the Louisiana Department of Education's latest annual report card. The report shows that the number of schools in EBR receiving an F doubled to 16, meanwhile the number of schools receiving an A increased by two to 11.
There are seven new schools in East Baton Rouge Parish School System. Five of those are graded F, one received a D and one received an A.
Howell Park Elementary, Melrose Elementary, Merrydale Elementary, Park Forest Elementary and Children's Charter Schools dropped from a D last year to an F this year.
Claiborne Elementary and the Mentorship Academy of Digital Arts improved from an F last year to a D this year.
Baton Rouge Magnet High School had the highest overall score at 130.1. Westdale Heights Academic Magnet School came in second with a score of 126.6. Sherwood Middle Academic Academy had the third highest score in EBRPSS with 121.9.

Now you're just making up stuff. Here is a long article discussing the AG's opinion. It says nothing about "cherry picking" any areas.

I think it would be best if I just not respond to your posts again. It's pretty obvious you're clueless about the issues.

I realize Amorossa is not the city, but even Mary Olive can't say for sure she is speaking for the city.
Is she or isn't she when it comes to suing to stop the petition? do you know?

Baker, with a D. grass isn't always greener. StG has more in common with Baker(when it started) than Zachary(when it started) in my opinion

Outside of Gardere I don't see these other black areas that BR is bouncing around to annex businesses.
