Spinoff thread: DWI question

If a suspected drunk driver makes it to his/ her residence and gets inside without 5-0 getting him/her can they still charge the driver with DWI/DUI?
Background story: my coworker got charged with DWI and claims the cop followed him home. Said had he made it inside, he couldn't have been charged. Poor bastard literally got arrested in his own driveway by the trooper.

It was that way twenty years ago. I would guess it is still that way today.
EDIT: In '08 the City Attorney of Mandeville had an issue related to this topic.

Not sure about your state laws, but if the trooper witnessed him driving and he was impaired, it is considered dui in most if not all states.

That's sick this cop wants to potentially ruin this poor man's life all after getting home safely.

Guy claims the trooper used failure to use a turn signal as the reason to initiate the stop. This was in Laffayette. My friend claims he was on te steps of his porch, talking to his girlfriend via cell phone when the trooper pulled in his driveway and that was that.

Years ago, I was driving home drunk. Stopped at the store and some guy pulls up saying I ran him off the road. He claimed some old damage was caused by me. The damage was rusting so I knew he was full of shite. Told him I would give him my insurance info and he could work it out with them. He refused and said he called his brother who was a local sheriff and said he is on his way. I jumped in my truck and took off to my house. Guy chased me and got my plate number but I lost him. Sheriff shows up at my house 30 minutes later. I answer the door with a drink in my hand. He asked if I have been drinking. I told him when I got home, I was pissed off because some punk tried to blame some old damage on me so I started drinking when I got home. He left and that was that.
