From my light research it seems the problems associated with zipper merging comes from early mergers not knowing the system and refusing to let people in.

Steve Blow, a Dallas columnist, once wrote a column about how idiotic drivers are when it comes to merging.
He reminded readers that merging is a duet, not a duel.
They should put that in a PSA. It's not a competition. Work together, and we all get there faster.
