Spinoff: If you want to use Uber in Detroit, their rates are super cheap

30 cents per mile and 30 cents per minute.
Have yet to see any other town with anything lower than that. This however, is part of a bigger storyline of Uber's annual rate cuts (which normally come in January,). These cuts have, or will come to a town near you. Riders enjoy.

Uber Technologies will drop prices in 80 North American cities starting on Saturday. The ride-hailing company hopes the move will increase demand in a seasonally slow month.
Uber said it will cut prices in Los Angeles and San Francisco by 10 percent, Houston by 20 percent, and Richmond, Virginia, by 15 percent. Prices in some cities, including New York and Chicago, will remain unchanged for now. Fare reductions will eventually be extended to 100 cities, the company said. "We believe in price cuts when demand slows down," said Andrew Macdonald, a regional general manager for Uber.

They're going to kill their own product with these rate cuts. It's not helping demand and it's annoying as frick to drivers.

I still love Uber, but I have noticed a marked trend in deterioration of driver and car quality of UberX of late. I know there are more options and I might have to start doing select or something, but it's becoming Lyft-like

yea but you also get robbed

I have always loved Uber's narrative of decreased rates increasing demand. The funniest thing is that the initial rates all across the country were likely already cheaper than a cab. Drivers these days with a clue should know that Uber cuts rates because they simply can.

Had a driver last night go on an unprompted rant about Uber and how its shafting drivers.

Must be one of the more experienced drivers. The noobs are hardly aware of this stuff.

Which city?
My 3 most recent UberX trips were a 2014 Toyota Camry SE, a 2015 Avalon XLE (this driver was awful though) and a 2015 Avalon Limited Hybrid. These 2 weeks ago in NYC. Most recent UberX in NOLA was a 2013 Audi A4.

There are 2 situations in play here regarding the quality of the vehicle (at least):
The required age of the vehicle (which vary from city to city).
Drivers getting vehicles through Uber's lease program (which are more likely to be newer vehicles).

I have been wondering how the uber drivers in Atlanta put up with it. Absolutely no way they are making any money. I feel a little guilty about it.

I know NYC is excluded since OP says their rates are remaining the same, but while there I saw a sign that advertised a guaranteed $7,000 for the month of December if you were an Uber driver. I wonder what hoops you had to go through to get that guarantee.

Atlanta. We use Uber quite a bit (4-8 times a week), and we've gotten some mediocre cars recently. I don't mind a new Hyundai or Kia, but a 2007 Kia with cloth seats just isn't hanging in there very well.
There have also been some good ones recently, it's just not like it used to be. I actually like SF where every UberX seems to be a 2014-2016 Prius. For some reason I just think the Prius is a great UberX vehicle.

I go on streaks where I will get 4 or 5 nice cars then it will stop and I will get some pretty mediocre ones with UberX.
I keep wondering if my passenger rating affects that at all or if I am just imagining things.

It is simply the luck of the draw. Your rating is irrelevant.

Uber's rates were cranked up 10x on NYE in Baton Rouge.

Probably not a lot of drivers. NYC never got above 2.8 while I was watching it until about 2:30AM. There was no surge until after midnight too. But it is crazy the amount of drivers they have there.
