Spinoff- Why do we get emotionally damaged when dogs die?

On the high end the maximum lifespan of a dog is 16 years if you're lucky but anywhere upwards of 12 years and the dog is fighting father time. With such a short lifespan why do we get so emotionally attached and damaged even though we know that they won't be in our lives for a quarter of our lifetime. This is not a troll, just curious. I have a dog and he's my wife and I's best friend but I know he won't be here for long. I may be as sad as others when he passes but I doubt I'll hold it in the same light as my human family members passing.

Because some people have this thing called feelings.

Because they are more loyal than any human.
I think pets are here to teach us a lesson in life about loss.
We know that their time is fleeting, yet that doesn't stop us from learning to love them, to enjoy that special kind of friendship that only they can provide. A loyal sidekick to a loving master.
Losing a dog can help us learn to deal with the even bigger losses in life, and to appreciate the time with have with those we love.

people aren't actually in that much grief, they want to appear that they are in that much grief for attention purposes.

Everyone is different, I would be sad for a day or so but then I'd just get another dog

I'm a sociopath too. Some people just don't get it.

B/c dogs are better than most people and they love you pretty much unconditionally
Posted on 11/4/15 at 11:21 am to 13SaintTiger
Cause they love you no matter what.

Logic tells you that a dog will not be in your life for very long, you know upfront what to expect.
Posted on 11/4/15 at 11:21 am to 13SaintTiger
Because you spend a lot of time loving, nurturing and caring for him or her?
I don't how "life span" factors in. By that weird logic, losing a toddler shouldn't hurt so much.

Meh. My wife tears up everytime she thinks about how her childhood dog died, even though she wanted to get another dog.

Did you seriously need to come to a message board to get the answer to this question?

What don't you get? Losing a toddler is unexpected. People live to be around 70 on average.

logic told me my grandma would die seeing as that's what grandmas do.
I was still fricking sad.
Losing something important to you makes you sad...if you aren't a sociopath

So get another dog. And when that one dies around 12, you'll grieve, and then probably get another one, and rinse and repeat.

she's only upset HOW dog died not just that its no longer here? your wife sounds dumb.

Not always. Children are born with diseases, too.
And "expected" vs "unexpected" makes your logic even stranger. What if the dog dies "unexpectedly"?
