Sales tax in Boston is 6.25%. I was floored when I bought a few articles of clothing and discovered there was no sales tax on clothing. The same applied to shoes I bought. I did a look up and discovered there is also no sales tax on groceries and many, many other items. Any Bostonians on the board?

NYC doesn't tax clothes less than 120/item

It's nice to catch a break somewhere.

because they are "essential" consumer items is the basic idea

they have high income tax and property taxes and various other ways of generating revenue

i'm for more sales tax, and no income tax

the people with illegitimate forms of income easily avoid paying as much tax as the honest ones

if all of our state tax was derived from sales tax, it would put everyone on a more equal footing, IMO

He's essentially advocating a total use tax which isn't some strange policy. It's pretty doable if done right.

Their income tax is less than LA's but the property tax is where they get you.

A sales tax is a fair consumption tax.

Rich people buy lots of shite, pay lots of taxes on that.

Poor people buy way less shite, less taxes.

Income tax discourages working hard.

bottom line is it would make people that don't make a lot of money think twice about huge purchases.

Which is fair in a sense. I don't think cars should fall under this. But everyday items would make it more level.

I wonder what % of income tax is not reported or paid

With sales tax, it's harder to avoid paying tax(minus internet purchases obviously)

I think it would benefit the honest taxpayers more than the dishonest

I tend to lean this way as well. Taxing productivity (income) seems wrong to me.

Actually I think clothing tax applies to purchases in excess of $175.

If you have a higher sales tax (use tax) you also attract the money of those that participate in what we will call black market economies. Those people paid cash under the table or say barbers/hairdressers, lawn services, maid services, waiters/waitresses who normally might not pay their fair share. Also add in the massive amount of spending by drug dealers who normally don't pay income tax.

Typical condescending OT response with no actual substance...
