Not one that will eliminate 100% of the bill. For a well insulated home with about 2800 sqft You will need about a $45K system.

Disagree. I'll recoup my money in 3 more years.

If true, you are not the normal circumstance. I've been following the numbers closely for the past several years and the average solar customer will never pay for their system in this area. Of course we have very low electric rates. If you have high electric rates the ability to recover your costs will obviously be quicker.

Low electric rates and the states portion on a 25k system is 12,500. I'm only out of pocket 5k, so its going to pay for itself quickly. Without the credits, it's worthless to do it with current technology.

What do you consider an average sized house?

Thats what is about to change. Solar is about to become 75% more efficient. Less product needed which means lower cost. Throw in new battery tech that will power your home at night and boom.

I missed the part where you are only out $5,000 total. Were you able to save around $1,000 per year?

I save on average about $100 per month. I paid $5k.

How long before these systems reach 90% rate of efficiency?

It's funny how the cost of maintenance is not figured in on these great investments. Don't these systems have batteries. Batteries don't have a 25 year life. Maybe 5 to 10. I bet the batteries are probably a pretty good chunk of the 25k. How about cleaning the panels? That costs something even if you do it yourself. I have never cleaned my meter.

You do know that refineries are loving lower oil prices. Refinery stock is up across the board. Lower oil prices lowers their cost.

Do you think US refineries or Overseas refineries are loving it more?

The cost of refining oil is a lot higher in the US than elsewhere. Outsourcing refining oil will shutdown US refineries.

The added cost to transport it wouldnt make sense. Not saying they wont but the demand here is high.

One 200lb battery with 300 amp hours. Last 15-20 years. Cost couple hundred bucks.

What added cost? You think they are filling tankers with raw crude in the US then sending them on a one way trip to another country?

You think those tankers are coming back empty?

Nah, They can way undercut cost due to cheaper labor and no environmental or safety regulations. Plenty of margin to turn a profit with shipping.

Well heck, since my bill runs about $380 levelized, maybe I should look into it. Between living like Eskimos that are scared of the dark and running the pool pump, we're always $325+

Yet, this is what you said:
quote:

You cannot buy a $30k solar system that can run an average sized house 24/7. The fact of the matter is that in most places, even with government money thrown in, you will never recover your investment in solar.

You painted with a wide brush and acted like you know what you're talking about for everyone. Solar pays for itself for most people within 10 years. In some cases, half of that. The panels and inverters have 25 year warranties. Where I live is definitely the best for solar but it's still a very good investment for many other states. And I've seen plenty of people in HI, CA, AZ, LA eliminate their energy bills with $30k and less systems.

Someone mentioned maintenance, ok what part needs maintenance? Cleaning the panels? You can do it yourself.

The Fed tax credit is your own money. People get to reduce their own tax liability by 30%. So some of you can quit whining about "handouts" and the other nonsense. If you don't have a tax bill, then you won't recoup the federal tax credit.

OP, I think this still needs to pass the House and Senate though, right? Very good news though

It passed the House. Senate shouldn't be a problem.
