The whole idea of reparations for anyone alive today is just ludicrous. Everyone born today has the same opportunity as everyone else, if you are willing to apply yourself. Everyone born in my generation has the same opportunity.

You can't lump Africa into one. There are 54 countries in Africa and some of those countries are actually becoming very progressive.
Here is a list.
LINK

But as for as the who history thing and giving reparations. As for as I know, my family tree doesn't consist of any black slaves from the 1800s. The only thing I know about my family in terms of when they came on the US is on my grandpa's side, which came from Germany. Other than that, I have no idea how the others got here. Honestly, I do care if they were forced or what, but I am sure as hell they did come to the US.

If I were black and my family tree consisted of slaves, I would think, that at the time it was a horrible situation, but it did lead to a better life for future generations.

To be honest, I'm not angling for any answer. I'm genuinely wondering how, given all the circumstances, European civilization was able to advance so far ahead of African civilization. If anything, African civilization should have been ahead of European civilization at the start of the 1400's. but the exact opposite was true. I honestly want to know how that happened.

Gotcha. Yeah, it's interesting. I think the answer (from my layman's perspective, of course) lies in the fact that comparing the two continents' development is a kind of apples and oranges exercise. Or, at the very least, comparing oranges to grapefruit or something

Africa is bigger, and as such, always had more influences (both without and within) pulling in different directions. Probably the only way for it to synergistically progress was for more cultures within to pull in the same direction, but, much like Europe, that simply wasn't going to happen.

Idk, it's a fascinating topic, in all seriousness. Will probably study more in my free time in the coming years just to satisfy my own curiosity

But not the same means to take advantage of said opportunities. It's not a level playing field. Life isn't a level playing field. Some will have to apply themselves more than others and/or have some fortunate breaks to achieve similar levels of success.

And that's ok. If everyone had the same starting point and low/no obstacles to success, there'd be far less motivation to better oneself.

Agree, but...

This makes up for that IMO. I would agree that Donald Trump's kids had a leg up on most everyone else, but you see stories of kids coming from very poor situations getting college scholarships, playing at Carnegie Hall, etc.

Do some of us have to work harder than others, yes. But that is all it takes is the desire and will to make yourself better. In that sense, it's pretty level to me.

Sure, but the problem is that many kids born into the worst situations have little to no guidance and/or role models to show them how it's done.

You hear stories of rags to riches, but they almost universally have a parent who was a huge inspiration or some outside role model who took interest in their success.

On the flip side, there are some kids who are, in all likelihood, screwed from birth. Things outside of their control have torpedoed basically any chance they had of making it out. That is the issue with the whole idea that we're all on a level playing field or what not. We aren't, and we never will be.

If some have to work harder than others, it's not a level playing field. Honestly, no society is, not even ours. Like I said before, that's ok. That's reality.

Desire/will go a helluva long way, but those traits aren't panaceas. There will always be success stories and failures no matter ones desire level.

The socioeconomic class one is born into has the greatest impact.

They don't want to be taken seriously.

They just want to whine and complain. It's what they do best.

I disagree. We've already seen how the ridiculous demands and actions of BLM and the like have been tolerated.
