Yep. Was the big turning point in the war. One group from that day I'd like to recognize is the brave men of VT-8. It was their suicidal and sadly, ineffective low level torpedo runs in hopelessly obsolete Dauntless Devestator torpedo bombers that drew the Japanese CAP down to sea level and cleared the way for the Dauntless diver bombers to do their job to such devastating effect.

Only one man in this picture survived that attack. And he had to be plucked out of the water. He actually got to watch the Jap carriers get obliterated while bobbing in the water not far away.

Read shattered sword the untold story of midway. Blows anything you've ever thought of the battle out of the water

It's a history thread. I like history. That's pretty well known around here.

Yeah, can you give us some idea what all this book details? Are you saying it sheds light on things we didn't already know about the battle?

It's a tragedy that VT-8 airmen died flying obsolescent aircraft using defective torpedoes. However, it's simply not true that they played any significant role during Midway.

They came in first and drew down to sea level the Japanese Zeros defending the fleet. Right after that the Dive Bombers came in at high altitude. Had the Zeros still been at a high altitude they would have intercepted and almost assuredly shot down the Dauntless dive bombers which were almost as vulnerable as the Devastator torpedo bombers. The Zeros were too low to intercept the Dauntless though thanks to Torpedo 8 and did not have time to climb to a high enough altitude to intercept the dive bombers before they made their bombing runs.
