Should LA consider raising the tobacco age to 21?

Before you get all "murica," just consider the facts presented in the article:

per WWL

quote:

“The vast majority of smokers worldwide began smoking before they were 21 years of age, that’s 95% of all smokes. Almost no one began smoking after their 21st birthday.”

Louisiana has one of the highest adult smoking rates in the nation at 23 percent, which is notably higher than the national average of 15.5%. Rogers says that’s costing the state [billions in] medical costs and lost productivity every year, a sky high cost that could barely be recouped in cigarette taxes.

No, because too many state programs (State Police Retirement being one) are tied to cigarette taxes. The more you smoke, the money the state makes on taxes.

Yes, it should also go up by one year annually. I understand that it can't be done instantly, but Tobacco should be banned fully. It has absolutely no health benefits. In my opinion, sure, smoke e-cigs. They're better than smoking that ash, and you can still get your nicotine fix. But, why not try and just faze out cigarettes? There's no plus side to smoking it, as opposed to electronic vapor.

No, but insurance companies should be able to charge people way more (than they already do) for illness related to lifestyle choices

Hamburgers should be banned too, as well as motor cycles. I don't smoke, and I'm actually missing a lung, but tobacco was crucial in creating this country. It's also used in certain religious ceremonies.

If you’re old enough to vote and fight in a war, you're old enough to smoke and should be old enough to drink and gamble.

They need to get of the tobacco regulation all together. People are responsible enough to make their own decisions. It's a plant for crying out loud. Our founding fathers would be disgusted at the nanny state we've created.

This times a billion. So many of these small town conservatives love big government when it's stuff they personally hate.

Aside from being badass? I guess I agree apart from that.

This is Darwinism. Let the idiots die from tobacco who want to. Why do you care?

Like that is going to stop teenagers from smoking. The 18 age threshold really did not at least nationally

They tried to do this for the State of LA employee health insurance plan by adding a smoking fee. I loved the idea but they quickly bailed once everyone raised hell.

I don't think this is really Darwinism. By the time smokers die of lung cancer they're usually grandparents having already passed on their smoke loving DNA.

It amazes me that people try to argue with this. They also need to increase the taxes on it. If you want to smoke, that is fine, but you don't need to suck the system because of your poor decisions.

There was a time, 5-10 years ago college aged kids were not smoking. When I drive by Loyola, Tulane I’m starting to see more kids smoking cigs than years pass.

We don’t need more of a nanny state. No one thinks smoking is good for them, by now everyone knows the risks
