A Tennessee county whose sheriff praised Jesus on the Bradley County department's Facebook page—and then deleted negative comments about the post—is settling a federal First Amendment lawsuit for $41,000.

Sheriff Eric Watson wrote a post titled "He is risen..." on Easter, prompting a lawsuit by an atheist group and unnamed local residents in the eastern county of about 100,000. The deal calls for $15,000 in damages to be paid to the American Atheists organization and other plaintiffs in addition to $26,000 in legal fees.

"This settlement is a clear win for the plaintiffs, whose First Amendment rights to free speech and to be free of government establishment of religion were infringed upon," Amanda Knief, the legal and policy director of American Atheists, said in a statement. "We are pleased the sheriff has agreed to do the right thing by no longer using this official government social media account to promote religion."

The sheriff said it was not his decision to settle the case. He said he will maintain his own Facebook page.

"The people who visit will be able to know my personal opinions, expressions of faith, and other views in a totally unimpeded manner," Watson told local media.

Watson said the original post that started the lawsuit "reflects my faith, which is founded on the belief that Jesus Christ died for my sins and the sins of mankind."

I love how athiest and agnostics are somehow applauded for doing shite like this, but gun owners are considered nut jobs for wanting to uphold the second amendment.

If Atheism is a religion, than isn't the absence of anything religious promoting atheism?

Sue the Atheists for imposing their religious beliefs when our kids can't say Merry Christmas in their school b/c atheism is being taught by the state

It's not. The only people that claim it's a religion are the religious to make arguments like the one you're trying to make here.

Atheism is simply the lack of belief in the existence of gods. It isn't even a positive claim that there ARE no gods, merely the default position until evidence can be presented to prove the existence.

I'm not even addressing the War on Christmas nonsense as it's August, and you're too early for that.

Screw the people for suing and screw whoever allowed the suit to exist. This shite is just an excuse for money. Does anyone really give a shite if a sheriff posts religious stuff on a FB page? Screw you if you do, coming from a not very religious person. As long as they aren't trying to jam it down your throat in person or saying they won't protect and serve certain people because of their religion...I see no issue. Who even looks at a sheriff department FB page, other then some BS group looking for money?

I will give Atheists credit for holding fast as their #1 fight--- trying to keep AtheISM classified as non-religious...it grants them immunity in their discrimination/silencing of people who wish to exercise their constitutional rights. It's very clever really

Can't afford a Christian private school? Sorry-- you kr kids will be indoctrinated with the unofficial religion of Atheism. Plain and simple. It's time to change their status into a religion US-wide for starters.

No. They absolutely were not. Evidenced by the fact that they were able to file this lawsuit.

If I was a Satanist...i would pretend to be an Atheist and would be completely enabled to fight against the Christian enemy under the protective guise of Atheism.

Not all Satanists are Atheists....but not all Atheists aren't Satanists either

How is a post on Facebook an infringement on the first amendment? Facebook posts mean the government is establishing a state religion?????

So the government should automatically win every freedom of speech lawsuit based on the grounds that the plaintiff was able to the file the lawsuit in the first place?

Great logic there.

It's no more religious than not believing fairies exist. Are you religious in your afairism? Of course not.

This is a ridiculous strawman argument, and I'm quite sure you know that.

What are you even jabbering about? My sons have gone to public school for the past 9 years and the ONLY mention of religion has been the nearly ever present Christian variety.

The problem here is that you seem to think that NO mention of your god equals teaching atheism. It doesn't. At all. It simply leaves THAT up to parents, churches, etc.

Now...the minute some school starts to declare that no gods exist, fell free to point that out to me and I'll be RIGHT THERE by your side. Honest. but no one of any intellectual honest should side with your premise that not promoting your version equals the teaching of atheism.

I'll accept this as long as you agree that as long as I'm not in a church I have tax exempt status.
