Shell has cut costs and said it is preparing for a world in which crude prices never return to precrash levels and petroleum demand eventually declines. Shell Chief Executive Ben van Beurden said the company has a mind-set that oil prices would remain “lower forever”—a riff on the “lower for longer” mantra the industry adopted for a price slump that proved unexpectedly lasting.

“We are getting fit for the 40s,” Mr. van Beurden said, referring to a world in which oil prices are below $50 a barrel.

It's officially time to buy Energy stocks.

They could work on alternative fuel sources and hire people there. And then corner that market.

For all those proponents of the fallacy that the government should be "investing" in renewable energy, this right here is where it will actually come from.
With a constant low price of oil, Shell and other oil companies will lead a privatized effort into renewable energy and find a way to make it work and make it profitable.

I'd say the same thing if I were investing a billion dollars a year in wind farms and renewables

I think you have that backward. Low oil prices will not lead to investment in alternative fuels. It's higher oil prices that make alternatives more attractive.

Cracks me up when folks think massive corporations like Shell, Exxon, etc. aren't investing in alternative energy. Like these companies are gonna say "Well gents we had a good run, time to turn out the lights"

Enjoy it while it lasts. Automated cars will be the future.

Sitting on 3000 barrel an acre with no benifits

Like some posters have deduced, it's time to buckle up. Oil prices are about to shoot through the roof!
The hubris of these executives to declare things have changed permanently. Sounds eerily familiar to the dot com stock bubble in 1999-2000.

This is just my opinion... but this might be "expect the best, prepare for the worst" behavior. In other words, this doesn't mean oil prices will be "lower forever".
