the Japanese submarine I-25 was the source of the trouble. On Sept. 9, 1942 Japanese pilot Nobuo Fujita catapulted from the I-25 near the coast of southern Oregon aboard a seaplane and headed east toward Mt. Emily. His mission was to drop an incendiary (fire) bomb on the thick forest and cause a massive fire that would shock Americans and divert resources from fighting the war. Once over forested land, Fujita released the bomb, which struck leaving a crater about three feet in diameter and about one foot deep.

No, there was much more.

According to a later report: "The bomb in falling had struck a fir tree about six inches in diameter, much as though lightning had struck it, and the fin of the bomb had sheared off a tan oak tree five inches in diameter as cleanly as though it had been done with a heavy and sharp axe. Fragments of the bomb had been scattered over a radius of about 100 feet, one of the blazing pieces lodging in a decayed stub, setting it afire."Footnote4 After finding fragments of metal casings and thermite pellets, it was concluded that a bomb had caused the damage but it was assumed that it had been dropped accidentally by an American plane.

The next day searchers found the bomb nose cone and a casing fragment with Japanese markings, confirming the identity. They gathered up the fragments and pellets, totaling about 60 pounds, and hauled them out for delivery to the Army lieutenant in charge of the Gold Beach detachment. Soon Army and FBI officials were conducting intensive interviews and swearing participants to secrecy.

we've got some pretty good historians on here, I'm not one of them, but the Japs blew their wad at Pearl Harbor, just didn't have the resources to reach out and touch the mainland, try as they did, one of their schemes was dropping balloon bombs contaminated with Bubonic plague, I think it was? the few sane military leaders knew that if they didn't hit a knockout punch at Pearl Harbor and force us to sue for peace(gross miscalculation in the history of calculations,) that they really didn't have much of a chance

They really should have just focused on china. Had they left the US alone and conquered more of China and mainland Asia, and Germany either made a peace or conquerered Britain, the Axis could have presented Russia with a pincer attack that had their full focus. (Or you know, just not attacked Russia in the winter without adequate supplies)

Could have changed the whole global outlook

There are many interesting "what ifs" about World War II, but after their defeat by the Soviets at Battles of Khalkhin Gol in 1939, the Japanese wanted no part of a war with the USSR.

Much like Germany, they needed oil. China didn't have any in appreciable quantities. The Dutch East Indies did, and Japan couldn't get to it without disposing of the US and British navies. Which they did, temporarily.

There’s more to this story. The pilot always felt terrible about making this bombing run and many years later came back to the town to offer his 400-year old samurai sword that had been passed down in his family as a sign of his regret. Recall reading that he expected to be horribly chastised and planned to commit seppuku with the sword if it wasn’t accepted. The town actually gave him a key to the “city”. He also donated money and such to the town leading up to his visit.
