Depression could be treated using anti-inflammatory drugs, scientists now believe, after determining that it is a physical illness caused by a faulty immune system.

Around one in 13 people in Britain suffers from anxiety or depression and last year the NHS issued 64.7 million prescriptions for antidepressants, double the amount given out a decade ago.

Current treatment is largely centred around restoring mood-boosting chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin, but experts now think an overactive immune system triggers inflammation throughout the entire body, sparking feelings of hopelessness, unhappiness and fatigue.

Well, that'd be a convenient new fix because depression and anxiety suck.

Hopefully this is accurate. Be nice to have a safer alternative.

I like this. I've always had a hunch that it was. There are so many inexplicable cases in which a person's severe depression makes no sense. I've always had a hunch that the reasons might be physical and not mental.

People choose to be nervous and people choose to feel miserable. Not the same thing.

I often realize I can't control something so I'm not going to let myself Get stressed, but that doesn't mean I don't feel a sense of complete helplessness or fear or paranoia of things turning out very badly for me

This is generally true (likewise, people choose to not be depressed).

However, for some people, "depression" (and to a lesser extent "anxiety") is a real thing that is more difficult to deal with without treatment. Some folks respond to counseling and other coping techniques better than drugs. Some folks respond to drugs better than counseling or coping techniques. Some folks respond to a balanced approach.

But, folks for whom depression is a "real" thing constitute a tiny fraction of folks who claim to have depression. That's the God's honest truth. (Same kind of math involved in ADHD.)

I think this is true in some cases. But at the same time some legitimately need to be treated with meds. IMO the key is finding a good doctor who truly treats the patient and doesn't just write a script after 2 minutes with a patient.

I can't wait to hear what any of this has to do with who someone voted for?

So, what new anti-inflammatory drugs did these scientists develop?

This sounds like bullshite. "Let me pop an ibuprofen so I won't be sad all day."

Interesting you should say that. My SO got a strong anti inflammatory shot for some bruised ribs. It definitely elevated her mood for a while. And corticosteroids like prednisone are known to have an effect on mood too.
