shite has gotten out of control. Unless a hurricane was coming we never had school called off due to weather. Get under your desks and put your hands over your head in the event of a tornado.

Now I have to leave work to go pick up our kid, thanks to some jackass thinking its unsafe to be in class during a thunderstorm. Ridiculous

Eh…

Pretty sure we got out of school early in the 80s when we had unbelievably windy days in BR, though that was a very rare occurrence.

I think the idea was that it was heavy sustained wind with a high chance of tornadoes.

IMO most children are safer in the school building than being sent home to their crappily built homes and trailers.

School systems don't want to take on the liability instead of doing their communities a good deed.

When I was in school, the nuns would make us pray that God would send the hurricane somewhere else so we wouldn't miss school.

This was in N.O. so you can forget about snow days.

Google the March 1, 2007 Enterprise, AL tornado and that will tell you why schools do it now. 8 students killed when an EF-4 tornado struck Enterprise High School. Since then, schools have decided that it is in their best interest (and for the most part, matching the desires of parents) to send students home early.

I’m not saying closing early is a good or bad thing, just explaining why I think it’s become more popular for them to do.

The road that my school was on from K-10th grade flooded. It was the only way in and out of the school. We got out all the time when we were supposed to get several inches of rain, which is pretty frequent in S LA. It was awesome as a kid

Some of you fricking idiots have no clue how liability works

In a state that’s as sue-happy as Louisiana is, I don’t blame them one bit.

shite, half of y’all that start these threads would be the ones to sue a school system then come here and start a thread ‘why wasn’t school cancelled’ if a tornado turned your child’s bus into a hot wheels car

I don't buy the liability argument. These decisions are made by public servants and they are largely shielded by qualified immunity.

I think it's simpler: they see the opportunity for a day off and they take it.

Blame people for suing everyone due to the dumbest shite imaginable. Also, I'm sure little Tommy isn't going to get dumber because they miss one day of propaganda disguised as education.

just enjoy the off day. there’s more to life than sitting in a classroom or cubicle. Go grab some lunch with the kiddo and maybe see a movie afterwards

My brother in Christ, nobody is keeping you around if you're not high level and a decision you make costs millions, regardless who's paying.

Wow nuns praying that someone else will be hit by a hurricane.
That’s disturbing.
