Saying something is "Americanized" in a negative context

When did this become a common thing? I hear it all the time, this tv show is so Americanized, this restaurant is Americanized, that's such an Americanized thought, ect....
Two quick examples, my coworker was talking about nude beaches in Greece and how beaches in America are so "Americanized"
Someone on this board posted something about Mexican food being "Americanized"
1. What do you consider "Americanized" to mean?
2. Why is this often a negative thing? Maybe our beaches are normal and Greeces are Greekinized?

taking something from another culture and changing it to fit American standards/wants
seems pretty simple and it is not always a bad thing

Anytime someone tells me something is "Americanized" I just say "so it's better"...then I say the pledge of allegiance and sing the national anthem.

This. When it's used with a disdainful tone of voice, it's generally done by Whole Foods shopping granolas who have spent a little time in Europe.
I love Europe too, but I also love American pizza, donuts, football, capitalism, and ranch dressing.

Americanized means taking something that is unique to a different culture and altering it to make it mass produceable and palatable to average american consumers.
Usually, this is considered bad because the mass marketed version will generally be relatively bland, tacky, and/or of poor quality.
Example: Chipotle peppers are a smokey mild pepper native to south america with a fair helping of heat. About 10 years ago, chipotle peppers were the "in" trend in food. Suddenly, every fast food item was "chipotle". However, their "chipotle" was actually a very weak mayonnaise sauce that lacked much of the bold flavor. The mayo "chipotle" sauce was the "Americanized" version.

I know it's not always negative but often it is. The beach thing really bugged me.
She's going on about all these weird people on Greek beaches made her feel uncomfortable doing weird stuff and then makes the statement
"It was so nice, beaches here in the US are just so Americanized"
Like bitch, what you meant to say was better

Other countries do this as well.
The "American" burgers in Germany are the grossest thing to be called a burger anywhere. In France, "American" style sandwiches often had French fries on it (doubly hilarious?)
In Belgium and the Netherlands, "Mexican" food often had pineapples, peaches, and oranges in it.
ETA: in Germany, Greek gyros were served with shredded cabbage (called kraut). Atypical of real Greek or Turkish gyros.

Yea that's the other thing, like no way beaches in America feel more American than beaches in other countries
CRAZY

No, that's probably not what she meant directly. The stereotype for "American" beaches are massive, overbuilt shorelines with high-rise hotels, tourist trinket shops, and tacky bars and restaurants that no local would be caught dead in. In this context, "American" really means "any place with tourists" as tons of international beaches are just as bad or worse.
Also, beaches in the US are rarely clothing optional, where many European ones are.

Surely you understand that a lot of ethnic food served in the U.S. isn't authentic right?
Posted on 6/27/16 at 8:29 am to its1999
Well, the pork at La Morinita, as authentic as one can get, has pineapples and citrus in it.
Gyros in Greece typically have french fries and a tomato based sauce on them in addition to the lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and tsatziki.
