Salary vs hourly???

I understand unions were once a thing, but how did we get to such a divide at most industrial companies where white collar employees are salary and blue collar hourly?
Why should one get paid for every second he’s there, while the other just accepts a salary and works however many hours it takes including nights and weekends? Why is this still a thing?
In my experience, both work equally as hard and most of the time share duties when it comes to projects with the salary guy actually putting in more time before/after the hourly guys cut out.
And then there’s time and a half, double time options while the white collar grunt just is out there for free.

The blue collar guys don't get to come to the company Christmas party, baw.

Hourly guys want to be paid more for anything over 40 hours in a week.

There's give and take. I might work 70 hours one week and then if there's nothing going on a few weeks later I'll take a few days off or knock off early a few slow days. I also get performance bonuses that are more than what the OT would be.

Karl Marx’s incorrect communist Labour Theory of Value.

In general salary seems to pay more for the same job than hourly.
Hourly can make more, but salary can go get a second job in their time off.

Negotiate a higher salary instead of crying about working over 40hrs

A lot of that has changed in the past few years. What's even more annoying is essential vs. non-essential salaried employees.

Once you start getting any decent amount of overtime, management quickly attempts to switch you to salary.

Depends on the job. I do better at salary in a restaurant than I would hourly. I have the ability to make the job more efficient and keep the hours to 40-45 per week though

Hourly = completely replaceable. You get paid for your time.
Salary = some value that's not easily replaced. You get paid for your accomplishments.

Hourly depends on the needs of the job, almost like contract work. Salary is guaranteed, until they lay you off. ![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconLOL.gif)

FWIW OP is the same guy who said PTO shouldn’t exist. That companies should just pay their people more money.

Blue collar guys work harder, are more likely to be laid off when things slow down, and don’t get to leave the job at 2pm on summer Friday’s.

Most of the salaried folks get paid OT at my company after they hit a 4 hr casual gate. They get paid straight OT for weekend work. You have to reach a certain level where you get bonuses where the paid OT stops. I am at that level and the bonuses are less than the OT and I used to get paid working on project integration.
