I carry GAf, Atlas, IKO, OC, and certainteed out of Midwest mills as my stores are in the Midwest.
They all have bad runs with granules falling cough cough Owens Corning, atlas used recycled tires around 2005 period and metal somehow got in the granules where you had roof rusting,
Now common practice on architectural shingle use to be to use 20yr 3 tab as your hip and ridge versus the mfg hip and ridge to save money.
Now snow markets they use on edges ice and water shield to help protect from snow build up. On my home and rental property in BR I used synthetic underpayment and ice and water shield on the valleys and edges. Do I have to use it no. It gives me a peace of mind.
Over the years GAF and Certainteed always made a good shingle and stood behind their product.
