A few questions. Do they work? Do they work well enough to justify the price? Do they work on hardwood floors with rugs(not super thick rugs)? I think there are other brands beside the irobot- anyone have experience with different brands?

I've been wondering the same.

Your thread title sucks more than those vacuums.

from a technological standpoint, these things are a very cool device...pretty amazing, really.

if you are looking for anything other than very light sweeping, they are not gonna do it for you, as they don't have suction (sweep only) and very small capacity for debris/hair that they manage to gather. you can clean more in 10 minutes than one of these can do all day.

They work well. I have a black lab that sheds like crazy and my roomba does a great job at keeping the floors clean

I disagree. We let our Roomba go in our house about twice a week. It picks up a shite ton of stuff. Goes between hardwood/rug fine, no problem getting over thresholds between rooms. Well worth the money for us.

It vacuums the rug (wool) as good as our regular vacuum.

glad to hear that...mine was an early generation and I don't have a pet in the house, so it sounds like they have come a long way! I may try another one eventually.

They work but with limitations. The biggest being that you need to run it frequently for it to keep a room clean. That is because they are not powerful and do not go over every inch of floor. But if you run every day or every other day, it will help keep a room more or less clean. It's great for going under furniture and along baseboards and picking up dog hair.

Just bought a Neato yesterday and let it run through the whole house this morning.. pretty cool technology. Picked up most of the dirt on the floor. It did miss a few spots though

I have two iRobot Roombas. I don't remember what it's like to be a peasant. They're amazing.

I got a Roomba so I wouldnt have to sweep every day so I wouldn't see white dog hair on dark wood floors. It serves that purpose pretty well. Turn it on when I leave for work, it docks itself back on the charger when its done. Just be careful there's no small stuff or phone chargers on the ground to get run over

I was considering an iLife A4s. The reviews on amazon are quite good.

Your regular vacuum must be garbage. My family has been buying Roombas for years and even at their best they are little better than manual carpet sweepers. That's all they can do, they don't have the power to do more than get the surface crud. That's fine for hard surfaces but not so much for carpets and rugs where most of the dirt is down in the fibers. If you're impressed with what that thing picks up then you should imagine what it's leaving behind.

OP, you'd have to be a pretty nasty and lazy person to imagine a robot vac will replace a normal vac. Get almost two commercial-grade Sanitaire vacuums for the price of a Roomba

Before leaving it I attended, you better walk the premises and make sure that there is no shite or puke on the floor.

Other than that they are great sweepers and do a serviceable job.

In laws have a roomba. When it works it is great. Half the time it is getting stuck under things.

First you have a robot that's only there for floors? Then you get one for non consensual sex. How long you think it'll take before they demand justice.

I'm not expecting massive suction, just want it to keep the wood floors tidy.
