I've done New Orleans to sante fe.

Prolly will never happen again.

Highlights included getting across the spillway coming home.

if all 4 can take turns driving, that's not bad. Hopefully in a vehicle that at least 2 can sleep comfortably at a time. Texas is a long haul but If you get to see some nice sunsets and sunrises from the road it is pretty cool.

Also,if you like books, read On The Road by Jack Keroac before you go.

Los Angeles sucks. It's the Atlanta of the Pacific Coast. San Diego is way better, practically heaven on earth.

The low route on 10 is boring unfortunately, but it's the quickest route to San Diego. You can then take the coast highway north. There is the Hotel Del Coronado, Gas Lamp District and Old Town in San Diego. You can watch the Padres play BB during the season. La Jolla's great, the cove is beautiful, and Torrey Pines GC. I love Laguna Beach up in Orange County, a neat small beach town. Stop at the Santa Monica pier in LA (you can spend a bunch of time in LA if you want, there's too much to list). Then stop in Santa Barbara and have dinner at the marina at Brophy Bros. Next stop is the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The head on up to Big Sur and stop at Nepenthe Restaurant overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Then on to Carmel, Monterey and San Francisco. Then cut northeast to Lake Tahoe and then south to Yosemite. Then Yosemite over to Mammoth Lakes and over to Death Valley. Then to Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon Then back on I-40 stop at the Petrified Forest and the Meteorite Crater. That should take about 2-3 weeks if you want to relax and take it in. :)

West Texas is terrible.

The drive from Phoenix to Vegas is really pretty. That's all I've got.

Make the trip on a greyhound bus. But make certain you have your shots beforehand.

Don't listen to the people saying don't do it. I did 5 road trips out west in my early 20s with buddies and have so many great memories. Do not fly. The boring arse drives are where some of the best memories will occur. Have fun.

This sounds like a great trip.

I understand everyone telling you to fly but you are a bunch of young guys fresh out of college. There is no better time in your life to make a ridiculous 3000+ mile road trip. Everyone should experience that drive across Texas once, the desolation gives you an appreciation for the rest of the country, and every road trip you take after will seem like a trip to the grocery store. Be sure to stop in San Antonio, maybe Big Bend, and get some grub at L&J in El Paso.

Las Cruces, NM to San Diego isn't much better but you can stop in Tucson or Tempe/Scottsdale for a day or two to break up the drive. There are plenty of hot UofA and ASU coeds and great patio bars to get rowdy in. The Sonoran desert and sunsets in that region are spectacular:

A hike up Camelback Mountain is well worth a few hours of your time as well.

Once in San Diego, all of the recommendations from Redlands Tiger are spot on. San Diego has some of the best breweries in the country and the hottest women as well. A few hours in TJ is an option to if you want to walk across and get some tacos and a cheap whore.

I would add to RT's itinerary if you have the time and are into outdoors stuff, when you leave the Grand Canyon head up to Utah. Bryce Canyon NP, Zion NP, Canyonlands NP, Arches NP, and Moab are some of the most incredible landscapes in America.

Also, just a heads up, if you are travelling west on I-10 you will pass through a Border Patrol checkpoint 20 minutes west of Las Cruces, NM. They have K-9s and stop people everyday who are making road trips and happen to have a stash of mary jane. They won't send you to jail or anything but they will take your stash and hassle you for 30 minutes.

Same applies when travelling eastbound. Just across the CA/AZ border there is a checkpoint. If you are travelling I-40 or any roads north you needn't worry about the checkpoints.

We drove from NOLA to San Francisco, down the Pacific Coast Highway to Los Angeles and back on I-10 (except we detoured through Austin, TX).

We went to practically every National Park along the way, including Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Yosemite and Carlsbad Caverns.

We took 3 weeks to do this. I think we spent about a week in San Francisco because my sister was living there at the time.

If you fly you won't get to see all the sights or do everything we did. After you get into the working world, it seems like you don't have time or inclination to drive cross country for weeks at a time.

Take your time and drive and see the USA. I would love to do drive again and what I missed out on the first time around.
