Reveille Opinion Article: Tigerland dress code discriminates against blacks

Only a select group of people have to worry about being denied from a Tigerland bar because of their attire. The dress code for the bars in Tigerland screams “no black men allowed.”

I witnessed an occurrence at JL’s Place in Tigerland the night of the LSU vs. Auburn game where a black student wasn’t allowed in because he was wearing all white Nike Air Force 1s. Several people wearing white shoes behind the student were allowed to enter — the difference was, their white shoes were not Air Force 1s. Air Force 1s, especially the white ones, have always been extremely popular among the black community since the first release of the shoe in 1982. They were even nicknamed “Uptowns” because of their popularity among inner-city kids in Harlem.

Why isn’t there a no khaki shorts rule? It’s possible for someone to get upset if someone were to spill a drink on them — maybe it’s not a rule because it may eliminate the majority of the white boys. This is also terrible business practices. It’s disturbing knowing these bars are not concerned about all the money they’re losing — they seem to be more worried about minimizing the black crowd. I’m sure these bar owners are fully aware they are not running an establishment on the same caliber as Jay-Z’s 40-40 Club — although, that’s the impression they are giving off with their mile long dress code. They are taking advantage of being privately owned businesses and creating dress codes that limit the amount of black men allowed into their establishments.

So?

There are plenty of white college kids that wear stuff that goes against the dress codes of those bars and have been denied entry.
Hell, one Wednesday night a few summers ago, I got turned away from Mike's because I was wearing Adidas soccer shorts (we had decided to go out of a whim and I didn't feel like changing). If the codes were only about race, they'd have let me in.

It's been like this since the late 90s. We just have way more sensitive pussies running around the world these days. Don't like it? Go open your own fricking bar or move the frick out of 'Merica.

I've seen them reject white men for the same attire, so stop.

So they are dragging this up again? Any one want to take bets that they bring up the purple and gold rebel flag this spring?

Private business = whatever dress code they want.
I also don't believe someone was denied entry because they were wearing Air Force 1's.

Yup, had a buddy get rejected.
Private businesses they can do what they want.

Some of the bouncers are just dicks to everyone and some try to maintain the facade that the dress code applies to everyone equally. It doesn't though. I've known bouncers that have confirmed they try to limit the amount of black patrons. If they can't keep them out with the dress code, they'll start playing country music inside.
Edit: whether or not it's some kind of major injustice is another matter. Bars have to maintain a certain demographic in order to be successful. I'm sure they don't solely discriminate against blacks, although that would be the most common. You can't have a college bar full of 50 year old men either, and I'm sure they would face similar obstacles if they became more common frequenters.

This is true. I have witnessed many a white trash get turned away from those bars.
In Oxford it was the same way. I probably had 3 hats taken from me early in college from The Library Sports Bar for wearing them backwards. And they don't give them back

Or they could just start playing country music like back in the day....

This is something that people overlook. And the fact people overlook it so much in this country is pretty fricking terrifying.

Yea, they don't frick around with hats there. I was there a couple weeks ago and drunkenly turned my LSU hat backwards for a second while watching the LSU/MSU game, and got yelled at mighty quickly. They were nice enough to let me keep it though

Once I turned my hat backwards to do an Irish Car Bomb race with friends and mid-chug it was snatched off my head and I never got it back
Its tough to argue for your hat back though when you're in the bar with a fake ID

That's because black men in BR are responsible for the majority of the violent crime in BR. There's a reason Fred's hasn't been on the news having a Bella Noche moment.

I've never seen a bar dress code. When did this start, and why no all white shoes?
Posted on 9/30/15 at 9:20 am to TheCaterpillar
It seems like they should just have a no hat policy.
