Rep. Cori Bush: Juneteenth freedom should also mean safety from police violence

This Juneteenth, I invite you to reflect on the promise of freedom. Freedom doesn't simply mean freedom from enslavement. Freedom is an affirmative goal, it is one that promises liberation, safety and peace of mind. It is the promise of a full and prosperous life
As we celebrate Juneteenth this year, I call on all Americans – starting with my peers in Congress – to make a commitment to freedom and liberation.
quote:Where I’m from in St. Louis, we’re dying. Over a seven-year period ending in 2020, our city has led the nation in police killings
Yet, Black communities are still denied basic human rights protections. From the moment the first slave ships landed in 1619 to present day, Black communities have been denied basic lifesaving resources, locking us into cyclical trauma and violence.
quote:It is finally time we stop responding to trauma with more trauma and to violence with more violence. We must put public health at the center of public safety. Our communities need help, and it is our responsibility to provide it.
It’s not just cycles of violence that stem from slavery – slavery quite literally lives on today through our system of incarceration and policing. The 13th Amendment explicitly permits slavery “as a punishment for crime.” It is no wonder then that Black people and Black communities across this country are devastated by yet another system of bondage – policing and criminalization.
As we celebrate Juneteenth this year, I call on all Americans – starting with my peers in Congress – to make a commitment to freedom and liberation.
quote:Let’s celebrate Juneteenth baws… smh
We must dismantle anti-Black, white supremacist systems of violence in America and build a future of care.

And safety from black on black crime!
And black on Asian crime!
And black on white crime!

St. Louis has had the highest murder rate in the country the past 6 years yet police are the problem.

I mean, it will be if you don't commit violent crimes.

It's never enough. I'm always curious what the end point/dystopia looks like.

Freedom does not promise safety. Usually it entails the opposite.

At this point I'm not sure it's possible. If they would have started that philosophy 100 years ago it may be possible

Please, let us just commit horrifically violent crimes IN PEACE.

This is where the slippery slope to The Purge begins

Maybe blm should be protesting in black communities, and blacks shouldn’t protect and idolize criminals or make martyrs out of them.
I do agree that blacks have responsibility to provide help to their own broken communities and culture (just taking a holiday from destroying them would be nice). Celebrate Juneteenth Independence Day by actually starting to be independent and showing some personal responsibility.

Using logic from Ibrahim Kendi and other Anti-racists this is the correct reasoning for such a high murder rate. If there were no cops the people would not be filled with such rage and " criminal" intent that they would feel the need to lash out.
