Rent-to-own nightmare: Woman pays $6,000 for basic washer and dryer

The easy solution may be renting, but one woman found out it can be a very expensive proposition.
After her old washer and dryer broke, Nicole Broomfield decided to go the rent-to-own route. She brought home a new Kenmore set.
"It should have been $1,792 and some change," she said the salesman told her.

Broomfield quickly learned she had been charged "a little over $6,000, close to $7,000," she said.
It turned out she had paid almost $7,000 for a basic, white, top-loading washer that retailed for $800 online, and a plain white dryer that should have cost $700.
Broomfield insists she was only told about the reasonable weekly payments and never read the fine print because there was no paperwork.
The store only showed her a digital contract to sign on her phone.

NerdWallet.com put it into perspective. They report that a $450 HD TV paid with a credit card carries $90 interest over 22 months, which is reasonable. However, they said that the same TV at a rent-to-own store with a one-year, $20 a week rental puts the price tag of over at $1,000 — nearly $600 over the cash price.

She should have just stole a washer in dallas. Its under the 895$ price pf being prosecuted. Then go back a month later and steal the dryer

Last year I was looking to buy a small pre built shed. I stopped by a place off of 61 and was getting pricing. The guy told me they offer financing so out of curiosity I asked what their normal rates were. The feller told me they don't go by rates they go by affordable monthly payments. He started reading off some down payments and rates people were paying. They were paying more than double the cash price for the shed by the time it was done being paid for. Blew my mind that folks had actually taken that deal.
Salesbaw "This model is 3400 cash. We just had a one delivered to a gentleman who only put $300 dollars down and is only paying $185 a month for it."
Me "For how many years?"
Salesbaw: "4 years"
Me "bruh that's almost $9k"
Salesbaw: "But you're not paying as much per month"

Never dealt with these types of companies before, but I find it hard to believe they can get away with not providing a contract. But, how little attention do you have to pay to your finances if you recall the weekly price should have totaled around $1800 and you ended up paying close to $7k?

She could have walked out with them on a dolly, not paid a dime and gotten away with it.

In what type of neighborhoods do these businesses operate?

It was probably tax payers money she was wasting anyway

She can’t tell the difference between a little over and close to. That’s a huge gap. Which explains why she couldn’t understand why she paid a ridiculous amount of money for a washer/dryer.

She is a dummy. It's no secret that rent-to-own places use people who consistently make bad choices in life to turn a profit. They've been that way for decades.

Reminds me of one of my favorite Louis CK bits.

so...she expected to be able to pay a tiny amount per week or month and get the same deal as someone who can pay upfront? What kind of sense does that make?

Sounds like her kredik is very bad and paying a very high interest rate.

One of the (if not the) biggest failures of public education is a lack of required personal finance instruction.
Sadly, higher education is one of the benefactors of the ignorance in this area.
There is no motivation to change this either.

Everytime she paid, she could see her account info.
I don’t understand how she didn’t see this?
