The original residents/patients were shipped by barge from New Orleans under the cloak of darkness and super secrecy

Only other lepor colony is or was in Hawaii

The few people I have had contact with that had leporasy were extremely nice and overall great people

there are still a million leperosy patients in the world. India has the highest. Guy I know volunteered in a leper colony over there. Humbling experience.
