Ill be starting my first "big boy" job soon. Suit some days, slacks and tie some days. I need a recommendation on a pair of nice dress shoes, I currently wear cheaper $60-$100 slip ons but I would like a nice black wingtips I can just have resoled when need be. Budget of around $500. I'm relatively clueless on nice brand names so Im open to the OT's recommendations.

Seems like the boilerplate answer is always Allen Edmonds.

You could get 3-4 pair of Johnston Murphy's for that budget

I honestly don't think anyone will be able to tell the difference from $70 to $500 shoes

Im not looking for anyone to tell the difference. I am looking for a quality shoe that will last. Id rather buy one pair of shoes every 5 years than 5 pairs every year. I am very open to any options cheaper than my budget however.

My current pairs are Chaps Astor, both brown and black. Good looking and super comfortable from day one. I get compliments on them every once in awhile too. And at Rack Room I can get 2 pairs for $90. My current pair of brown have been worn 5 days a week for over a year and still look basically new, bottom of the sole not so much . I'll never spend big money on shoes, but I'm not in a profession that requires it. YMMV

Alden. Quality made in America shoes that will last you a lifetime. Anyone who says you can't tell the difference is a fool. Keep buying those $60 dress shoes every year or 2.

Don't spend money just because you have it.

You could get 2-3 good pair of shoes for that price. I wear a suit every day. Have never paid more than $175 on sale.

There is not a "good pair" of $175 shoes unless you get some Allen Edmonds seconds. If they are not Goodyear welted, don't waste your money

You can, but it also depends on the job environment.

It's not a shoe snob thing, but you don't want a cheap shoe if you are wearing dress shoes day in day out.

Fwiw, you don't want to wear the same dress shoes every day. You want them to last.

Buy two pairs and get shoe trees.

Best advice ever, Sabi.

Black and Brown is what I'd add to it.

This. I can tell the difference just by the sound it makes walking down a hall. I don't even need to look at the shoe.

Black and brown is ideal, but if you can only afford one pair now, get color 8. It goes with pretty much anything.
