Reclaimed empty lot's and urban farms/gardens

Anyone familiar with these.
They beat blight that's for sure but are they usually in lots that are owned by the city. I see on six figure lots routinely.
Also the fruit an veggies, can I grab me a fresh onion for my burger?
Also do poppy plants grown well in Nola? Prettty sure one ljytlr fsfk has about a bedroom sized area of him some.poppy bulbs with a couple flowers.

Maybe make a map of them all and pass them to the homeless people... they ban just go grab them a satsuma off the tree when hungry.

It's important to have the extension service do a soil test on the empty lots being used for food gardening, no telling what chemicals were dumped out way back that are still sitting in the soil waiting to make their way into your veggies.
