My wife did this at her last job. Her grandfather just passed away and her boss made her take vacation time instead of Bereavement leave. Stating that her grandfather was not immediate family but could not provide her a handbook of the rules stating this he just made them up as he went along while claiming there was an employee handbook. It was a long series of events that she went through leading up to that. Wasnt a very high paying job and I was fed up with constantly hearing her moan about it so I told her to go ahead and quit.

I've done it before but it was to move to another city. It's nice to take a month or so off every now and then to recharge the batteries

Last time I got really pissed off at an employer. I went home put my resume on the web. Had two phone calls within an 2 hours and went on two interviews in the following week. Took longer to get all the paper work done than to find the job.

Yep. If you need time off, at least get a new job first then push back the start date.

I'm lucky because I own a company outside my regular job that produces enough income for me to live off of.

This is the OT, everyone has a year of emergency cash, do it.

If you're on the soccer board it's a dumb move.

I am actually not far off from this. My wife makes bank. Not independently wealthy, but we would be fine.

I actually kno a fair number of friends who have done this. It seems to be picking up steam among new grads and ppl less than 5 years out of school. Personally I wouldn't but they seem to enjoy not working.

I think it may have to do with my generation

I've done it but had enough money in my frick You account. Took 6 months off and got a new job. Two years after telling the company F Off they paid me 4X my old salary as 1099 independent contractor.

As someone that reviews resumes a lot, gaps in employment are not recommended.

I'd work for free for a few months before having gaps on my resume.

Unless you are going to grad school then this is a poor decision.

I've heard of this happening a few times . Good for you. I'm happy with my job but always wondered if I could hop on that gravy train as well.

If you can't get a job lined up before you quit then you can't get one right away and will be looking for work for sometime. IF you have any savings, which thinking like this leads me to believe you don't, they will be depleted very quickly.

One of the cockiest things I ever saw was a guy in my office put in his two weeks with no job lined up. Boss man caught wind pulled him aside and asked what it will take to keep him happy. He is still here and happy as ever.

Sometimes it just needs to be done.

Personally, I don't have it in me... But I also love my job.
