Question regarding construction jobs

Listening to WWL this morning and they mentioned that the airport is expanding and it's expected to create 13,000 construction jobs.
Isn't that bull? I mean I'm sure the 13,000 people that will build it weren't all unemployed beforehand. So weren't the jobs already there? They are just doing another project.

13,000 is a lot of people. I'd say probably 90% of them were on another project and will roll over to this project.

I'm sure they meant 1,300

Could've been the case, but my question remains. These jobs really weren't created.

Most of those guys are going to come from a different area, though. So although the jobs weren't "created" it still helps the local economy tremendously. I also agree with everyone else, they HAD to have meant 1300.

They give the construction job numbers all the time for the LC projects (along with the permanent job numbers.)
It just means it will cost a butt load more when you want to remodel your bathroom.

They prob just take the man power hours estimated to complete the project and divide it by 2,080 to get some ball park number.

Most construction workers are subcontracted so when they aren't working they "aren't employed".

the joint venture acting as construction manager at risk on the new terminal is bound by very aggressive local hiring quotas as part of the contract. I don't remember what the number is but it is big.
it is doubtful (impossible) that even a large portion of those jobs will be formerly under employed New Orleanians but it is part of the agreement

They could be counting every person to touch the materials.
If they want a 2x4 then the guy who grew the tree, the crew who cut it down, truck driver, crew at the mill, another truck driver, crew who used the wood, then the painter.

I suspect most of them will come from out of state like normal. The people who are out of work here are comfortable being out of work

No OTers work construction.
Site managers maybe sitting in their air conditioned trailers posting on TD

I'm to lazy to type it all out but yes most of those people already have jobs working for the contractors.

CF should be ending very soon. They were supposed to be out by Jan 1st but I think they have until Feb 1st now

When are you going to finish those 3 bridges?

It's a creation of temporary jobs no matter how you look at it. Yes, it will probably be mostly currently employed. However, if this job weren't available, they would move to the unemployment line. Any positive increase in wage spending can be considered creating jobs.

We are done with all but one and until the river goes down we can't do anything on it, starting 3 more in a few weeks.
