Question for OT Mechanics about engine replacement
Posted on 1/3/17 at 2:52 pm

Got ripped off on a 2009 Jetta purchase for my son.
Just pulled the oil pan and it has metal in it. Engine about to go out.
Looking at options so that I am not looking at a total loss.
One option is finding a used engine and having it installed to replace the shot one.
Is this even feasible? How much would I be looking at in labor to install the replacement motor?

What did you pay for the car?

I know somebody who did this recently with a Volkswagen and I think it was about $8k. Prepare your anus.

Are you in the BR area? Being a German car means your options are severely limited. TBH, You may as well just count this as a hard lesson learned. I would put zero dollars more into that car.
Trust me.

Look at the car sales page. There is a reason you see so many used german cars for so cheap. Thats also the reason you see so many poor black fold driving around 20 year old Mercedes and BMW's. They'll just throw them away when they become undrivable.

What is the specific model and engine size. I can give you the shop time it take to R&R the motor

It would really suck if it were to get stolen would it...
Wouldn't it.

I understand the sinking feeling in your stomach right now. If you've ever taken one thing i've recommended seriously on this site take this as advice. You're sitting in a $5000 car max right now if its running good.

Turbo motors are very hard on oil. The center bearing cooks the oil when the motor shuts down and throws that now carbon into the oil pan and eventually clogs up the oil pickup and starves the engine bearings of oil.

It wouldn't suck if I had put full coverage on it.

If its the 2.0 you are looking at 13.4 hrs or labor to R&R the motor. Most shop are around 100.00 per hour.

Probably $2-4k. You sure you gonna have to swap it? Just bring it to a mechanic and get an opinion before you go this worst case scenario.
