Question about the name Richard

Okay, maybe y'all can answer this for me. I have never understood how the name "Dick" was derived from the name "Richard". I know that these days, you don't really hear of men that go by the name "Dick" if their given name is Richard, but it seems like in the 40's and 50's era it was real popular. Maybe because of what else that nick-name refers to is the reason it's no longer in use?

I have a cousin named Richard. His dad and his son are also named Richard. They refer to each other as Big Dick, Little Dick and No Dick.

When people had to write things they often shortened people's names. Back then they also use to call people names that rhymed with their name.
Richard to Rick to Dick
Richard to Rick to Dick

Fun fact to know and tell:
Yes, this is all true:
and this happened as early as the 13th century. This is also how the term "dick" came to be associated with the male genitalia and as another word for a guy being a jerk.

Isn't Rich, and Richie also a nickname for Richard?
Not sure why we all have to shorten every name anyway.

Is that why they shortened William to Bill?

Here's a short article about Richard/Dick and other nicknames: LINK
I've often wondered about the use of Ted for Edward since it's also the nickname for Theodore.

I mean, I definitely can understand "Rick" as a nick-name for Richard, but "Dick" I never really understood.
