So i bought a load of gravel at a benefit auction and the guy delivered it and it's a heavy clay mid size rock mix. Not what i would call gravel but none the less I've got it. So I used the tractor and spread it all out and smoothed it as much as i could. If i rent a vibrating plate tamp would that work to compact it enough or should i rent the trench roller? I'm wanting to use it as a pad for my son's truck to park on instead of rutting up the yard.

Let it rain on it a time or two. Much of it will settle. Then just let Jr. run over it a few times with his truck.

You need to spread it all out, like you stated, drive all over it with truck and or tractor. It needs to dry, also I would get a couple of sacks of powered lime throw it all over the area, before you drive over it. Get it worked into the mix, and come back with some limestone or crushed asphalt.
What you got there will never pack right.

I ended up with some for the same purpose that was bigger size than I was expecting and wouldn't compact enough to drive on.. Considered what you are, but ended up selling it on facebook to someone that would scoop it up.

They actually thinned it out yet still left enough for coverage, and I just ran over it alot with my truck and lawn mower and it ended up working out ok.

But really wish I had got just got crush run.

You got clay gravel instead of washed gravel. If you spread it eventually the clay will pack down and the gravel will be on top. Get it spread and let it rain on it a few times . It will compact nicely .

Perfect. So no need to rent equipment then?

Drive on it and it will pack. No need for a compactor in my experience unless the pad will be thicker than a normal slab.
