There is no way that question is even remotely difficult for anyone decent at math, let alone a "whiz".

This was probably the most difficult problem designed to challenge them and get the students to use logic. I don't think the teacher expected them to set up an algebra equation and solve for "x", but instead use multiple steps to get the correct answer.
If the word problem did not have .3 gallon remaining if would have been a very easy problem for a fifth grader to solve.
