Pope Francis has extended the powers of Catholic priests to forgive abortions, making the announcement in an apostolic letter released Monday
quote:

"I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life. In the same way, however, I can and must state that there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father," the letter states.
quote:

"May every priest, therefore, be a guide, support and comfort to penitents on this journey of special reconciliation," the letter continues. "I henceforth grant to all priests, in virtue of their ministry, the faculty to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion."

Gotta keep the young people interested in the church somehow.

This isn't brimstone and hell-fire church. This is the church that preaches the teachings of Jesus, that all people can be forgiven of their sins, if they choose to repent and seek God

Why do religious topics always get anchored? The majority of this board follows a Christian faith, so this is relevant. The board shouldn't be flooded with this stuff, but the topics should be allowed to naturally die out instead of being anchored

The Catholic Church has it easy in these changing times. They have a man that can watch the culture and adjust doctrine accordingly. Us protestants don't have that luxury.

I don't understand how a man can give power to another man. Forgiving sins is on Jesus and Jesus alone.

Actually, they can't but Catholics like to think they can. To each their own I guess, even if they are dead wrong.

Does a priest forgive God when a woman has a miscarriage?

Catholics misinterpret one verse into thinking man can forgive sins. God is doing the forgiving of sins, not man.

This is not a practical change in the US.

Bishops have always had the ability to delegate forgiveness for abortion to priests. The bishops of the US have universally delegated that authority to parish priests for a while now.

The Pope is merely making that rule universal.
