Excellent work.

I can promise you that if that was a family member of mine being held hostage, I would want an officer to take the first open shot and end it.

I would have zero desire to wait to see if by chance the guy wants to give up. F**K that guy! He choose to disregard human life and put a woman's life on the line.

Did the police try to talk him out of it before firing? A bad shot could have easily struck one of the motorists passing behind them.

From what I understand, they're trained to shoot if they have an open shot. If they react responsibly and their shot results in a civilian casualty, legally, the hostage taker is responsible.

Ehh, I don't know. Id side on the the reasoning being this. "Did you feel comfortable enough in your shooting skills and that the threat was high enough that you felt confident in taking the shot was necessary," no matter the outcome. But again, I don't know.
