It might be a little too early, but Groupon always seems to have a really good deal for NYC in its "Getaway" section. You usually have to wait until about 2 months out.

Use priceline's name your price option. Last time I went to New York I stayed in a 4 star hotel right across the street from the Waldorf Astoria.

Years ago I used Priceline for NY and got a decent hotel. Last year, I put in for 4 star and I was put in a broom closet with a view of a wall. When I went to complain, I was told that I couldn't switch rooms because I booked through Priceline and got "one of the Priceline rooms." This alleged "4 star" (right!) hotel literally built two floors of broom closets to scam people on Priceline.

Reserve a spot for the 9/11 Memorial if you plan on going

No need to get tickets anymore. It is completely open. I hear the museum is really nice, but I haven't had a chance to go yet.

reasonably priced ($200-$250/night)

You can get quality rooms for that rate if you look around. Hilton Times Square, Park Helmsley (Park Lane Hotel) and Park Central on 7th Ave.

Recommend a meal in Little Italy, Junior's for breakfast (or after Broadway play. get a cheesecake here too) and try a slice of Ray's pizza. Too many good eats to recommend. Go to Sardi's, if only for a drink and app, just to say that you've been there.

You should know they are illegal in NYC. My advice? Do as much as you can outside of Manhattan. Plenty of awesome things to do in Brooklyn/Queens/The Bronx. Your wallet will thank you, and you'll get a much more authentic experience.

Just don't get off the ferry in Staten Island- its not worth it
