L.A.'s my hometown, and I'm sorry to say it, but none of the places you listed are places everyone wants to live. On the other hand, this might mean slightly less insane housing prices than other areas. Maybe live east of RC and commute there to work.
I also know a nice house for sale: $1.5 mil, on the coast, maybe 45 minutes from South Gate. Working in South Gate, though …

Rich folks' grass is plenty green in L.A. That's why the rest of the state is so low on water.

How 'bout Echo Park or Silver Lake? Pretty trendy, but you might be able to find a small apt. or something you can afford. Close to freeways and commutes in all directions, 30 minutes or less so to the beaches. High hipster quotient though if that matters.

I do not mind a commute of an hour or less. I would like to be within 30-45 minutes of a beach if possible.
Then you are probably going to want to live on the west side or in the south bay. Like USC said, those places are really pricey.
An hour commute is probably a good thing to anticipate. I live about 10 miles from work and it takes me a bout a half hour to get in. And I live way east of most of the traffic.

Been there, done that. And might do it again if my wife gets her way.

Yikes well that sucks! I will have to look at places 10-15 or even 20 miles away would be the most I could stand with traffic each day.

I see, well now I have no idea what to do.

There are some nicer areas in Long Beach that might be worth giving a look. Wouldn't be too bad of a drive to either Buena Park or South Gate

Any names of places I can look at in Long Beach?

Not an area I know that well, so can't really help on specifics. Generally I would say farther south towards Seal Beach.

I imagine anything within a mile or two of the beach is gonna be $$. The rest of LB is … well, that's Snoop's old hood.
Anyway, check out the area along the number streets north of Belmont Shores. Maybe you can find a tiny apt. that's affordable.
Also, check out the real estate section of the Daily Breeze (dailybreeze.com). That covers the airport area down to LB. Also, check out the real estate sites to just to get a handle on prices.

How is Pomona and that surrounding area (Chino, Rancho Cucamonga) etc?

Pretty much all of the young social areas are in West LA and Hollywood.

These two are basically barrios, so you should cross them off your list.

His office is there, he doesn't have to live there.

What spots would you tell someone to look at?
Rent a room in Venice, you can get a room within a few blocks from the beach for $1000 max. Then work out of the Southgate office, your commute will be less than an hour each way most days. Venice is cool, it does have some weirdos, but its also close to all of the nicer beaches.
