For hiring managers, do you ask your direct reports to do a self-assessment of their own performance and have them send this to you for review?

We generally go over these together in person when I do their annual review. I am good about doing quarterly reviews though, so they are never surprised at annual time.

Heck no. I just give my people whatever review they need to get the highest percentage increase in salary. Don't have time for all that. There is actual work that needs doing, instead of just taking up work time judging the work that we do.

I get my direct enployees to do an annual self assessment. It's a simple 5 section review where they rate themselves from 1 to 5. And give an explanation. They submit to me, I go over it and I add my ratings and explanations. I then go over it with them that way everything is out in the open between the employee and myself. We discuss a pay increase that reflects his rating. Everybody walks away knowing their strong points and weaknesses. And making more money.
