Abolish automatic transmissions.

We're probably better off with women texting rather than driving standards.

I'm left handed. It didn't really hinder me when I had a manual trans. I still try to stop myself from doing it, because I know how dangerous it is.

Wouldn't matter.
When I was a teenager my first truck was a manual and I used to T9 the shite out of my blue Nokia while driving.

Except when you're on the highway and don't need to shift.

if anything, that just adds one more thing to do while texting and driving

texting and driving doesn't kill people, driving and not paying attention kills people.
Don't punish everyone because a few cant figure out how to safely text and drive.

I'll text if I'm stopped at a red light. Sometimes I'll get honked at because I don't notice the light changed, but at least I'm not a moving projectile.

All this would do is cause accidents to go up because people wouldn't stop texting

Posit reaction time.
Posit unexpected event while you look at phone text coming in.
Posit liability for maiming family of 4 with wage earner paralyzed.

My 6 speed jeep was a pain in the arse to text from. Same goes for holding a beer and even harder a beer, a rifle, and a light.

Would you be willing to bet your own family's lives that i can do what you do?

How about stiffer penalties when caught? Just like we need for drunk drivers.

Every vehicle I owned from 16 until about 27-28 was a manual transmission. I still T9 texted while driving until around 24ish when hands free calling became a thing.
At this point, I think its impossible to stop it completely. Best solution IMO is some of the newer in-car infotainment systems that'll read incoming texts to you and allow you to speak your response back.

Best solution is to give the same penalties for texting and driving as we do for drinking and driving.
Instead of an interlock bitches get a cell phone blocker installed in their car for a year and pay thousands in fees. Upon 2nd offense they lose license for a year, 3rd offense 5 years, etc. Put their mugshots on the internet alongside those of people who drank 4 beers and drove home.
We could fix every road and bridge in America within 5 years with the revenue generated.

I have no doubt there is a way to build in a sensor that would disable a phone if it detects movement over a certain speed. Have it key off of GPS location.

I believe there's some laws or FCC regulations that would need to be changed, because as far as I know, using cell phone signal jammers is illegal (although I won't swear to it).
Even if they did install it, someone would figure a way to disable or trick it. Just like people have figured out how to ground the "park" wire on in dash DVD players to trick the player into thinking the car is parked since being in drive disables the video playback. Dummy GPS apps are already available on smartphones and tablets...wouldn't be long before they made it work with an in-vehicle phone disabling device.

Nope. Texted and ate breakfast on my way to high school in my manual car
