Recent thread on him
Wasn't too popular in this thread. He and Chris Kyle both may exaggerate; the case can also be made that they are not your typical Sailor because they like to talk about and exaggerate their stories, but I respect the hell out of them. God bless

I don't have a problem with him. Other SEALS have been known to fabricate shite but he's mostly cool. I was in later than him but the teams I've worked with didn't have anything negative to say about ML

Aren't Kyle's exaggerations flat out lies though? Slight difference

Yes I do. I would say the more you talk, the less it's true is a good rule to live by. I think Kyle and Luttrel both did brace and highly publicized things, but there are 1,000 Sailors who did similarly brace things and barely ever mentions it. Don't let the ones who scream their stories from the rooftop sway your opinion on the quiet heroes

I judge a Vet by what he or she does for other Vets once they get out of the service, so, he's a good guy in my book.

I've never thought very much of ex-servicemembers that talk and reminisce as though their life story was all about what they did and how great they were. I'm more impressed by the quiet professions who provide selfless service and continue to help fellow Vets once they get out of the service.

So, IMHO, Mr. Luttrel is a great person.

Exaggerated or not, what that man did was an incredible act of bravery and courage. Hats off to anyone who has served in any capacity.

God Bless America.

I did not serve. They veterans I know are Vietnam era. The ones that were in combat didn't talk about it. One guy I worked with back then would say he was there, he played in a band. OK cool - but I knew guys that would jump out of their skins with the slightest noise.

I served, not a squid or SF, just regular GI. Luckily, I never saw action. I like to think if I saw action I would have risen to the test, as I was full of piss and vinegar at the time, but then again I may have frozen up. I'll never know, but I like to think I would have been tuff in combat.

If half of what the books and movies portrayed are correct how could you think they are anything but hero's. They put it on the line and survived what was thrown at them. Is some of it sensationalized? Probably. But would it be a great story if the Lone Survivor was the only guy from a Seal Team to make it out after fighting a group of 8 goat herders?

In every conflict we need hero's to rally around and ML was one of those guys to rally around. Yes, a lot of people don't talk about what they went through (AKA un-sung hero's) but we need hero's (true or made up in portions) to rally the men around.

I have much respect for them and thank them for their service and being someone for the enlisted to rally around.

They both volunteered to look terrorist, on the terrorist soil, in the eye and say f*** you and fight for our country regardless of race, status, class, or opinion. They are better men than me.

More like about 200 hardened Taliban terrorists.

And don't forget the 16 (iirc) who died when these animals shot down their chopper with an rpg. That's another 16 heroes.

Never cared for those who profit off their service, especially when those who share the story that made them millionaires are dead.

But that's just my opinion.

Also it's always been funny to me the difference in the approach SEALs and Army SF take to this type of thing. It's almost as the Army does all they can to avoid the limelight, because they understand the implications that sort of thing can have on future missions, while also disrespecting the reputation earned by former members, whereas the Navy guys seem much more eager to find a publisher and try to make a buck. The problem is, what we've seen with several of these guys, they almost always end up exaggerating their story, which does more to discredit their service than anything else.

Remember that rumor that Army SF units on missions would tell people 'We're Navy SEALs, we're here to get you out!"

I went to LSU before and after my three bluewater tours of VietNam.

There was a story circulating of a veteran taking a drafting class. The prof would sneak around and peek over his student's shoulders to see how they were doing. Said veteran warned the professor several times to not sneak up on him. Of course, the prof ignored him.

Several days later the other students had to pull the veteran's hands off the throat of the professor.

After an investigation, no action was taken against the veteran.
