Guns are the only things I'd touch out of a pawn shop

If you find a tool you like make an offer. If they don't like it, leave. Come back a month later--if it's still there, they may be willing to deal.

Remember, they're in the business of making $$$ off of loans, not holding inventory.

Don't forget all the gold. My friend has been a pawnbroker a long time and he sits on gold when it's low and sells much later when prices go high. Owns 2 nice Lambos, turbo porsche and a Maserati.

And be okay with buying items that are either beat to hell or items that are in fairly good shape but have been stolen and then sold to the pawn shop for drug money.

For instance,
quote:

Dewalt DW735 2015 model

quote:

got it for $300 + tax
quote:

brand new cost $549.99

clearly a stolen item

No doubt. The only time I go in pawn shops is to look for shite that was stolen from me.

You're not doing it right.

Pawn shops are awesome for guns (hunting, not hand), contractor grade stolen tools, musical instruments and amps, etc. if you know what you are doing and have a little negotiating skill. (telling them you know their code would not be negotiating skill).
