anyone built a brick or rock island to put the grill in, and have a counter for stuff, or put in fridge, sink, etc?

best place for blue prints or plans for these???

Just make sure you can clean it with a shop vac.

What's the estimated cost for that gravel and those big stone pavers?

That looks better/easier than a slab.

I built one almost exactly like the one in your photo and it wasn't that difficult. I am probably a 7/10 on the handyman scale. Hardest part was finishing the slab and I had a buddy experienced at concrete work help me with that. Mine had a sink and some storage as well as a lamp post on one corner.

Was it a 4" slab?

Do you have to pour a slab for that gravel/slate?

It was 4".

The gravel / slate doesn't require concrete. You dig out and then put down a sand base and compact it with one of those big vibrating machines (no clue what to call it). The island would have to be on a slab though.

I see. What's the cost per yd of that gravel run on average?

Did you anchor your kitchen to the slab?

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

I like the look of that gravel/slate combo better than a slab.

Hell yes. We measured it out ahead of time and fixed anchors into the slab grid when we poured the concrete. Again, not terribly difficult.

Built a 2X4 frame anchored to the slab. Faced the frame with treated plywood on the sides and whatever that board you lay tile on for a top. Used screws instead of nails and then put a bunch of brick ties on the plywood and bricked three of the sides. Then tiled the top. On the front I cut Hardy Board that was made to look like stucco. Hand sanded the edges to round them so the thing looked hand laid and then used construction adhesive to fix it to the face. It looked good.
