A missed court date.

My last court date that my lawyer told me don't worry about showing up to it, he had it.

He never showed.

Texting and driving is worse.

But these assholes here wouldn't dare advocate for a strict punishment for something they do everyday

Could be or they could be used ones purchased with loads of miles on them.
Bottom line is people with "money" are people with tens of millions or hundreds of millions of dollars. Someone that makes $80k a year could buy a new beemer and that's obviously not "money."

You skip out on court, but I'm a frickwad?

You had to do something frickwadish to wind up in court in the first place, that was my point

Pretty lenient but imagine having a job for the next nine years for the guy. "uhhh hey i need to take this week off because, well, I have to serve my jail sentence".

Most companies do background checks but still.

i know 2 guys who killed construction workers while being drunk in their vehicles.

Not 1 did jailtime, except the night they were arrested. All bonded out in morning, and given probation

It's amazing how little time people who kill others in their vehicles while under the influence do, in jail, if that.

I always say, get drunk, and accidentally kill the person you want taken out. Instead of murder, ur looking at probation. Do it with a gun, murder, do it, while impaired, it's a freebie kill, probation sir.

It's just amazing, you do more time getting pulled over for a DWI, than you do killing some one while being drunk.

Maybe ur state is different, but it seems like Missouri courts just don't give a frick.

The punishment seems fair. Instead of knocking out a jail sentence all at once he's going to have to take vacation from work every year just to sit in jail for the next 9 years. For some legal processes (I.e. Expungement - he won't be able to start that process until the x years after the last jail sentence is done, which is now pushed back nearly a decade).

To me the issue with DUI laws in this country is that they're too harsh at the 0.08-0.10 level and too lenient at the 0.15+ level, where most of the fatal accidents occur. This creates a culture where most adults have broken the law (although maybe they weren't caught) and generates a lot of sympathy for the crime of endangering people's live drunk driving a vehicle.

You make driving at 0.08-0.12 the legal equivalent of a traffic ticket (vs a misdemeanor) and you'll generate a lot of public support for increasing penalties and enforcement of extreme DUI's.

Unfortunately, for every person who ends a life by driving drunk, there's hundreds who been forced to to a roadside sobriety test at a DUI checkpoint after admitting to drinking 2 beers at dinner.

For every 5-10ish year sentence, you get 4-5 who get probation.

I'll never understand the punishments for it in many states. When i see those guys i knew in HS, who killed the construction workers, i give them hell. I rarely see them, but when i do, it's at a local bar, and i end up having to be led out, by friends.

Bad enough they have zero remorse, but years later, still drinking???

What do you think? 120 days + a week on the anniversary of her death for 9 years. That's a total of 183 days for taking a life. Messed up IMO.

Watch as he starts complaining about how her death is fricking up his friends plans to hit Vegas one of these years. She could very well be his focal of resentment instead of his solemn reminder of the wrongs he did.

I mean our system is soft, nobody really fears anything. Say what you want about Saudi Arabia but nobody steals anything there, they cut your hand off. Surprisingly when that is the punishment petty theft all but disappears. In the US you steal,go bond out of jail and go do it again and nothing happens other than it goes on your big bad record that 99% of minimum wage employers don't even look at bc they're so desperate for bodies. We start executing a few guys or removing limbs for drunk driving and you watch how quickly the dui attorney business in America dries up.

He also got 10 years probation with zero alcohol and has to call a number every morning to see if he has to pee in a cup or not. Everyday for 10 years.

The victim's mother asked for leniency since the driver has young children at home.

you make it sound like a whole 10 years of not being able to drink is a fair and just punishment for ending an innocent persons life. Her life was ended by his stupidity, he isn't a bad person at all but he did make a big mistake and for that mistake he should pay dearly somehow, she certainly did. 10 years of not drinking, making 1 phone call a day, and spending 1 week a year in jail is not just I dont care what her parents say makes them feel better. We have to instill fear in people somehow. Right now people go out, get trashed and don't care about getting behind the wheel. I never once said ban alcohol, but if you wanna get trashed, you better get in an uber or a cab and not put the rest of us in danger. If you wanna put people in danger then you need a long and harsh punishment.

Ok I'll play. What do you like about it exactly? It seems fair or what?

Hard to answer. Sure, lock him up for ever and he will eventually stop feeling remorse. The story fades and everybody goes on with their life.

Nothing will bring back the life of the victim. Lock him up for life and there is no story. No discussion on this site. No discussion on other sites. Just forgotten.

This way we are discussing it and hopefully will prevent another person from getting behind the wheel drunk. Part of the punishment is for the drunk driver. The other part is for prevention. I would have made it one week per year for life though.
