Almost anyone can join the Legion (women's auxiliary, son/grandson of legionaires, veterans, etc), but only veterans can join VFW.

Doesn't VFW stand for Veterans of Foreign Wars?

Yes. Veterans of the Civil War are not allowed to join.

The American Legion anyone can join. You can join as a social member, veteran, auxilary(if female) or as a son of a legioinaire. As a son of a legionaire, you can join under that if your dad, grandfather or great grandfather was a legionaire.

The VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) will only allow you to join if you are a veteran of a foreign war. You had to serve. It is not like the American Legion.

Most of these answers are wrong.

American Legion: You must have served on federal active duty during a qualifying period of conflict. The current qualifying period has been ongoing since 1990. The American Legion Auxillary is a women's group and you have to be a qualifying relative of someone who was a member of the American Legion or a deceased member of the Armed Forces.

Veteran's of Foreign Wars: Pretty much the same except that you have to been deployed to a combat zone or hostile area.

Unless you're prepared to answer a lot of vetting questions about your service, I wouldn't try it.

Bad form, sir.

I'm a member of both. In my opinion it all depends on the town on which is better. I've lived in towns where the VFW is a better post and vice versa.

Like anything, each post is a reflection of its leadership.

No. Set up an account and pretty much avoided the place until 2010. Then become more of a lurker. The expansion of the sites outside of the TR has drawn out more posts.

Greggs: Fighting the war on drugs, one brutality case at a time.

Carver: You can't even call this shite a 'war'.

Hauk: Why not?

Carver: Wars end.
