Appreciate any help here guys/gals/unisex/trans/homo or whatever else is appropriate these days.

I've got a 92 Lexus LS400 that I drive long distance daily. After idling it for about a 30 minute lunch break it has lost all power, blows "unusual smelling" smoke and backfires if I rev it up. No check engine light or odd readings on the dash.

I you guys think it is likely the cat converters I can take them loose from the manifolds. Being that I have a herniated disk and know I'm likely to break off some bolts... I don't want to give this a go without consulting with the OT first.

It's a 1992. It's 25 years old so who the hell knows what's wrong with it.

what color is unusual smelling smoke. If it has a sweet smell, typically means you are burning coolant and that is no bueno

I use it because the damn thing keeps going, still rides nice and I don't have to put high miles on my new rides. 400k miles and it was paid for so long ago I can't even remember.

If I can keep it going... I would like too but I'm not chunking much money at it.

idling for more than 10 minutes is just about the worst thing you can ever do to your car.

Just crappy Tylenol 4's. Had a go with opiate addiction years ago due to pain and now I just don't give a shite anymore. Pain is there.. gotta do what I gotta do.

it sounds like a clogged Cat, but the clogging could be caused by another issue. You can always remove the O2 sensor and tell pretty quickly

I would wait for awhile for things to cool down before attempting either feat

It was running shitty for a while so I re-did the ignition system which cured the issue. Figure maybe it killed the cats dumping fuel in them leaving me with this issue??

So I can remove the O2 sensors to bypass the cats? That sounds like solid advice rather than removing the cats themselves

By that you mean.. lasted 25 freaking years and 400k before it was an issue?? I do this every day on lunch during the summer. If its not a complete piece of shite that overheats I fail to see the issue. Letting it idle didnt kill the cats

The CATS on that model are designed to last 26 years.

You're need for solitude and AC at lunch has completely compromised that.

Shame on you.

My bad... guess I am just too selfish to take the feelings of my antique lexus into consideration

if you can drive it to Autozone - ask them to check it for you - Walker converters for Toyota V8's run around 100 bucks at Autozone.
